I am not sure who the people were that have written the past reviews of this place but check the police reports before you move in to any apartment. My room mate was just robbed at gun point right outside the door on his way into our apartment. It is not a safe place to live, cars have been broken into numerous times within the past 2-3 months.
Many people living here have complained about safety, the security people don't come by often, its badly lit and is unsafe.
Its not worth your life.
We are moving out before our lease is up.
Another thing- if you like large beetle type bugs and bird droppings than you will love it here, they are everywhere. Nothing better than opening your cabinet for a plate and having a large beetle jump out at you....

It's unfortunate this happened to you or anyone. I really feel bad for you guys. I have lived at South Lake for many years and have never had one minutes problem, the staff, the overall promptness of maintenance, the grounds, etc. are all wonderful. In today's society, don't you think that to just you are putting a black mark on the property. If they could have done something to prevent this from happening to your roommate; the staff would have. It's really not their fault. It's the world we live in and to just put the word out like that with no regard to new residents or the effect this would be on the staff in truly unfair. I can honestly say I feel safe living at South Lake Apartments. I think it's just the world we live in today. Can't blame South Lake Apartments.

Thanks for this post. The same thing happened to me last november outside my apartment (not South Lake). It was right in front of my door as well. Obviously, it's not a situation I care to experience again, so safety is a top consideration of mine now.

Southlake could have beef up the security patrols, and install more/better lighting... I agree, not safe at all, along with vandalism, that management ignores...

I agree, the problem is not all on South Lake Management. It's the outlying neighborhoods that are causing the issues. Whether you had a nice time living here or not, that is irrelevant to the issues at hand. These problems will not improve without some serious changes to South Lake Apartments.
They need a lot more lighting and much tighter security. Also, the locks on the doors were not safe, could have easily been kicked in. Windows were also unsafe, needed to be replaced with a better/safer design.
There are other places out there, so look around and read these reviews before you find a place to stay.

I live here at South Lake and have had no problems. First off, when you move in here, a background check is ran. ALSO, if you paid any attention to what you signed on your lease, you signed a neighborhood watch agreement stating that you would call the police or security if there were anything going on out of the ordinary. I have witnessed a lot of kids that come around here (who don't live here) and hide and do drugs on the bridges...but guess what, one call to the police, those little shits never came back and they were fined whoppin fines and were banned from this neighborhood. Bottom line, it could happen anywhere and as a resident it is part of your duty to report unreasonable behavior or anything you are unsure about. I've been here for 6 months now and we love it. I have 2 neighbors who have both renewed their leases and a neighbor next to me who has lived here for 10 years. And no she's not an old lady. I do agree that the grounds could be a little brighter at night. The waterbugs or roaches...I myself have not had any encounters like that. However, if you have ever lived in a place where roaches were a problem, you probably carried them here or maybe a neighbor did. Have them spray your apartment or spray yourself.
There are always people in EVERY apartment complex who hate it. ALWAYS. I've lived in a few places I've hated myself but you have to be reasonable and not just say South Lake is the worse place ever just because you had a bad personal experience which is not the apartments fault. It can happen in the worse or best of areas. I do recommend living here. The staff is great which is rare for apartments, the maintenance is average but they do show up fast. The grounds are clean and any time I have thought they weren't, I made a call to the office and they sent a maintenance man around to pick up trash! Which there is usually only a prob after a rain. I mean, we do live near a man made lake so what do you expect? Anyway, good luck to you all moving in or moving out. I hope you experience here is as good as mine has been. Oh and if you can, rent across the lake so you aren't next to the office. Makes it feel a little less like an apartment and its secluded.

My husband was assaulted in the parking lot when we lived here and there is gang writing on the exterior of our apartment. But I still really liked it there. It is the surrounding neighborhoods, they are awful. Atleast South Lake has courtesy patrol.

I lived there for a year and I loved it the maintenace always finished everything fast and the staff was really nice. If you think this place is bad move into Mariners cove thats where I live now. There is a lot more crimes commited here and I have had so many problems and I have only lived here for 6 months. My toilet had flooded my apartment three times and mainenace took over two weeks to fix it the first time and this last time took them a week. They also are infested with cockroaches they are everywhere. So South Lake may have some little problems but in compairison to other places South Lake is a great place and I am now moving out of my apartment at Mariners Cove and moving back to South Lake.
