We lived here for three months, but it didn't take long for my one year old to get scabies! Apparently the previous tenant had a dog that was infected with it, and the apartment wasn't cleaned well enough before we moved in. My poor little guy developed hives and was always itching! Also, my mother-in-law got bit by a neighbor's (unleashed) dog while out for a walk one night. Management did nothing about the incident.**PLEASE TAKE EVERY PRECAUTION BEFORE MOVING INTO APARTMENTS THAT ALLOW PETS, ESPECIALLY IF YOU HAVE CHILDREN. ASK IF THE PREVIOUS TENANT HAD A PET, AND ADD A CLAUSE TO YOUR LEASE THAT IF THEY ARE FOUND NEGLIGIBLE IN CLEANING THE PLACE THEY MAY BE LIABLE FOR DAMAGES. HOLD THEM ACCOUNTABLE. DON'T LET THIS HAPPEN TO YOUR CHILD!!!**

According to the CDC: How long will mites live? Once away from the human body, mites do not survive more than 48-72 hours. When living on a person, an adult female mite can live up to a month. Did my pet spread scabies to me? No. Pets become infested with a different kind of scabies mite. If your pet is infested with scabies, (also called mange) and they have close contact with you, the mite can get under your skin and cause itching and skin irritation. However, the mite dies in a couple of days and does not reproduce. The mites may cause you to itch for several days, but you do not need to be treated with special medication to kill the mites. Until your pet is successfully treated, mites can continue to burrow into your skin and cause you to have symptoms. So I'd say unless you moved in the day or so after the previous tenants moved out it's highly unlikely your child got scabies from the previous tenant's pet.
