Lock your doors...and don't live here with kids

Security here is a major joke. I wouldn't even call it security. I had to call them once because the guy next door was beating the crap out of his girlfriend. They took over 30 minutes to respond, at which point I just called the cops. We've lived here for less than 6 months and our cars have been broken into twice. Tonight we went out from 7:30-12:00 am and came home to our door kicked in and the door frame smashed to pieces. Nothing was taken, but I'm petrified now that someone was scoping us out. We have A LOT of valuable electronics, and we have renter's insurance, but what's going to stop someone from coming in here with a weapon' I don't want to live here anymore, and I'm going to raise heck with the office in the morning. When the cops came they questioned our upstairs neighbors who said they heard something and saw a group of men running away from the apartment, but "I couldn't find my cell phone to call anyone." What the heck' The person below you gets broken into, and you shrug it off' This is absolute insanity. I thought this was a nice, safe neighborhood. Boy, was I wrong. The office staff is nice, maintenance is good, and I like the overall apartment for the most part. But I'm not paying $1200/month to live in a place where I have to be afraid. If I wanted that I would have moved to the bad parts of Norfolk or Portsmouth and paid WAY less for rent. You're taking your chances. This neighborhood just keeps getting worse it seems. Take the chance on yourself if you want to, but please... if you have kids stay away! The parking is bad as well, and if you live downstairs you can hear EVERY tiniest movement from your upstairs neighbors.

So THAT's why you were hammering your door frame at 2am last night. Sorry I didn't see the break in, I was asleep up until right before I saw you dragging the cops or security or whoever into your apartment.
Sucks this happened, but I know the feeling. Two of our cars were broken into last summer (my complaint would be the one below). I thought security seemed to be better since then (they got rid of the fat girl security guard and got that dude with the gun) but I guess I was wrong.
If nothing else, you have one neighbor who * usually * watches the area in front of your door (or at least, once an hour, when I'm outside smoking). I'll look out for you, you look out for me, and maybe we can make up for the crappy security :)

I sure hope so. This is ridiculous. I try to keep an eye out too, and I'm often up late at night outside smoking too. What scares me about this is what if we had been home? You don't know what people will do. I told the office so that they could let security know to be extra watchful, at least for the next few nights. It's a very creepy feeling to think that someone was in your home.

If there was a domestic situation you should have just called the police in the first place. And the only reason I've ever called security was a get a car towed that was parked in my neighbor's spot. I don't know why else I would need security, I've never seen, or heard of anything bad happening here. Maybe I just live in an unusually safe building. Oh and parking... I've never had a problem, excluding someone parking in my neighbor's spot. My husband's car was parked in a spot for four months and it wasn't touched. Yet so many people review on here that their cars were broken into... Hmm...
