Years at this apartment: 1992 - 1994

We lived there from February 1992 thru February 1994 in a first floor 2 bedroom facing the woods. We had 2 children when we moved in and had our 3rd in December 1993. We continually had a roach problem because the apartment right next door was vacant due to a mildew problem that made it unable to rent. Whenever we had our apartment sprayed the roaches would just go next door and then come back over when the chemical wore off. We became very conscious of how we stored our food and kept the drains to the sinks and tub plugged at night -- that's where they like to come in sometimes. It was great having a 1/2 bath in the master bedroom and a dishwasher. The living room was huge and we had beautiful sliding glass doors that led out onto a patio and green grass. Plenty of parking and prompt trash removal. I loved that recycling was incorporated into the waste management. We had a heavy walker upstairs, but on the whole the neighbors we had were respectable. The worst problem of all, and this was most likely an isolated incident, was when our neighbor across the hall was savagely raped and repeatedly stabbed multiple times in August 1993. At that time our a/c was broken down and they were having a dickens of a time getting the motor replaced -- old equipment so we had our windows open. There I was pregnant and in my nightie in my bedroom when she comes screaming and banging on our door for help. Of course we helped her, but the poor lady was a mess. After that I locked our windows and doors and sat up nights with a bat in my lap. I ended up in the hospital for dehydration and the office gave us a hard time about paying for a hotel room so we could get some cool air -- but we legally won. By the way, the rapist escaped and was never caught, and he entered her apartment by lifting the sliding glass door off it's track -- demand a locking charlie bar if you have a door like this. I wouldn't live there again because of the bad memories and the roaches, but I suppose the 2nd and 3rd floors wouldn't be too bad. Oh, and the grass is littered with little doggy surprises that tenants don't pick when they walk their dogs.
