Frustrating

Years at this apartment: 2007 - 2008

I have lived (with my husband) in the Village of Woodshire for less than a year now. We will not be renewing our lease here for several reasons:
1. We have big, nasty cockroaches. I saw a big one (1.5 inches) the second day we moved in here. I called the management office and she seemed rather blase about it and informed me there was an exterminator who came every week. He came, but as he didn't see any roaches at the time of his visit, he didn't do anything except move things in my kitchen around. I think they run over from the apartment next door. I clean fastidiously (bleaching the counters, mopping the kitchen bi-weekly), but that doesn't matter. The roaches have infested the buildings and there is nothing for a resident to do.
2. Our master bedroom window leaks. I mentioned this on the second day we moved in. Maintenence came out once and removed some debris from the gutter above the window, but didn't look at the window itself. It stormed last night and I filled up a trash can and two Rubbermaid boxes with water. My carpet is soaked about 3 feet in. Management seems not to care.
3. Management has changed once in the six months I have lived here. All the office staff seemed nice, but utterly inefficent. Maintenance is worthless and almost never comes. It is also the only apartment complex I've ever lived in where maintenance doesn't leave a note saying that they had to come in and why.
4. There are always teenagers, random people, etc. hanging out in the parking lot. They're not really doing anything technically wrong, but it makes the whole place very creepy. There isn't really enough parking and at night, it is very ill lit.
5. The report of a raid on the meth lab here was true. Go here http://www.vagazette.com/news/local/va-news1_020908feb09 for the Virginia Gazette report.
6. I wouldn't feel very safe here if my husband wasn't here with me. We are college graduates with professional jobs and I will say we are in the minority as far as the general populace is concerned.
7. This is a small thing, but we can often smell cigarette smoke combined with a moldy/musty smell coming from our neighbors apartment.
We are moving to the Regency at Longhill, which seem much nicer and better managed. Their managers, upon hearing where we lived, said it was understandable why we wanted to leave and that they had heard so many bad things about this apartment complex.
They're also raising our rent. We rent a washer & dryer for $50 a month, which would be a total of $100 more next year. It's not worth the money. If you have to live here, spring for the washer & dryer, especially if you do laundry at night. I wouldn't want to leave my apartment at night.
I certainly wouldn't recommend this apartment to anyone living alone or with children. I wouldn't want to have kids here.
I feel I should mention the location is convienient. It is very close to Farm Fresh & Food Lion, I-64, and the colonial area. If location is all that matters to you, then live here, but otherwise stay away.
Sorry this is so long, but those are the reasons I can't wait to move.

And let's not forget the "BLACK MOLD" that is present in the buildings as well. Maintenance simply wipes it down and paints over it to hide it. Once of my neighbors has a child having medical problems as a result of the black mold in her apartment. Of course nothing is being done about it so there's another empty apartment coming.

I am the husband of the woman who posted here. I wanted to comment with an update as the apartment???s biggest problems (in my opinion) seem to be magnified with the summertime heat.
1. We were not aware of the problems with the air conditioner back in March. We could easily maintain a comfortable temperature all winter long, the summer however, has been a different story. For the months of June and July, the air conditioner managed to keep the internal temperature of the apartment at about 83 degrees Fahrenheit during the day, and eventually down to 74 overnight, assuming it runs continuously. After calling them about it every day for two weeks, they finally managed to look at it, and told me it was running at full capacity. If that is true, then I have never seen an air conditioning unit so poorly sized for the area to be cooled.
2. The roaches, which were a nuisance at the end of last summer and into the fall, are now a straight-up plague. While they???re not as large as they were at the end of last summer, there are infinitely more of them. If I was forced to live here for another summer, I would try to get a regular spot on their exterminator???s list.
3. Finally, the number of people loitering about has also increased with the temperature. Like my wife said, there is nothing illegal about this, but it does make it feel exceptionally sketchy???which is exacerbated at night by the inadequate lighting.
I do have to disagree with my wife on one issue; she said, ???If location is all that matters to you, then live here, but otherwise stay away.??? It is true that the location is convenient, but there are too many other apartments that are equally convenient. (Several on Merrimac Trail near the Village of Woodshire). I would try any of those before going back to the Village of Woodshire.
