I have been a resident at Pines of York for more than six years. When I moved in I was a single female, and having a safe place to live was a major concern for me since I wasn't familiar with the area...and believe me on the Peninsula there are a lot of apartment complexes and areas that aren't the best. My experience at Pines of York has been great. I wouldn't recommend this apartment to "party people" who are going to have loud gatherings at 2 am and who will be playing music late at night because the police will be called on you quick - but that's always been a good thing for me because I'm the type of person who goes to bed early and gets annoyed by party people! I'd say in six plus years of living at Pines of York there have maybe been 3 disturbances that I noticed, and every time it was taken care of very quickly. Meanwhile my friends in other apartments in Newport News and even the Coliseum area in Hampton are always complaining about noise and crazy happenings -- even gunshots! The York County police have so little to do they can respond quickly -not so for Newport News or Hampton!
The apartments are much larger for your money - though the rents have gone up significantly over the years, and I was disappointed to have to start paying for gas, which used to be included in my rent. Another nice thing is that there is plenty of parking...that will never be a problem in this complex, though make sure you pay attention where you park during a tropical storm because part of the parking lot floods! Also, the grounds are much nicer because there is a lot of open space and of course many pines surrounding the apartment buildings with areas to walk your pet (Pines of York is pet friendly too - just a one time pet fee and not the rip-off pet rent some of the other places charge). Though this apartment complex doesn't have as many bells and whistles as some of the other apartments in this area, they keep it well landscaped and maintained, and who really uses a tanning bed or community center theater anyway' One thing I wish they'd bring back is the recycling bin - it's not realistic to save your recycling up in an apartment to drop off at the recycling center later.
The staff of the complex are great, very friendly and helpful and they know your name! Maintenance at this apartment complex is MUCH better than others in the area. They will come and fix your problem usually the day of or day after you call it in. The staff also holds nice events throughout the year, such as a pool party with GREAT food where they even give out prizes, and holiday events where you can get more yummy food. Overall I would recommend this complex: there are single younger folks, single older folks, couples, families, and all are welcome. For families coming into the area, York County schools are some of the best in the area. Overall, for a person who wants a safe, quiet place to live in one of the best areas of the Peninsula, this is it!
