Fair apartment, HORRIBLE management

I lived here from Oct ?00 to May ?02. When I first moved in, the management team was GREAT. I didn?t have to interact with them very often (usually just once a month, when dropping off my rent check), but they were always friendly. When I first applied, I had some substantial credit history issues, some in error, but some real. They went way above and beyond the call of duty to help me sort these things out and get the unit.
When I had a problem, or a maintenance request, they always went out of their way to make me feel like they were *personally* sorry for my inconvenience and while the repair guys weren?t necessarily rushed out, they did come in a very timely manner, and always in what I considered an appropriate response to the nature of the situation.
Example: when my hot water heater stopped producing hot water, they clearly recognized what a serious problem this was and there was some out within a few hours. On the other hand, when I had a drain that was slow (not stopped, just kinda? slow), the guy didn?t show up until the next afternoon. Again, appropriate response to the nature of the situation, exactly how I would have expected a responsible agency to work.
This management team had really earned my loyalty.
Then, a few months before I left, for no apparent reason, they pulled the entire management staff (the manager, the leasing manager, and the assistant manager, IIRC), and replaced them with a team of the most phony, indifferent weasels I?ve ever encountered. Though I?d been there already for over a year, and never been late with a rent check, they accused me of missing a payment and tried to charge me insane late fees. I had to run out, from work, get a money order made at my own expense and deliver it again. It later turned out, of course, that the first check I had given them had been ?lost behind some other papers on their desk?. They credited me $25 on the next months rent, but it didn?t come near enough to compensate me for the time, trouble and the insult I felt. Then, to top it all off, they did again, TWO MORE TIMES, in the remaining few months I was there.
When it finally came time for me to leave, and at this point, I was more than ready too, they made all sorts of very false-feeling, obsequious ?oh we?re sorry to loose you? noises. They acted like they were loosing a dear friend, despite treating me like crap during our entire relationship and really having no other positive connection to me. Frankly, it made me sick.
As for my deposit, well, I didn?t get a dime of that back, but in fairness, by the time I left, any loyalty I had towards the management or the company behind them was long since gone. I didn?t bother to lift a finger to clean that place when I left. Before the change of management, I was so incredibly pleased with this place, that I would have gone out of my way to make sure I rented from the same company again, just out of loyalty. But after the change, it was quite the opposite. I will never, under any circumstances, trust this company again.
As for the unit itself, it wasn?t bad. The floor plan was a little oddly shaped, with a lot more hallway than I would have liked. The rooms were all reasonably sized, with the living room feeling a little on the small side. My two-bed, two-bath was a good one-man unit. Two people could have lived their pretty easily, if they were fairly intimate, but any more than that would have felt crowded, in my opinion.
Most of the appliances, while not the most modern, were all in fine working order while I was there. My only complaints being the water heater, which had an internal breaker that would inexplicably trip itself far more often than one would like to hope. And the washer and dryer, which were an unfortunately small, stack unit. Not a bad unit, but couldn?t hold very much at all, and nothing large like a comforter.
The soundproofing was also a little substandard, that or my immediate neighbors were a little louder than average. Not grievously so, but it was sometimes distracting.
It was a great location, very close to three different large grocery stores and substantial shopping. It was also close to two of the major freeways in the area, and yet, not so close that you were listening to traffic sounds all day and night.
Bottom line: Would I live here again' Would I recommend this place to a friend'
Sadly, I must answer no to both questions. Assuming they still have the same (or even just a similar) management team as was there when I left, I could never, ever live there again. Nor could I, in good faith, recommend this place to any one.
Should that management team get replaced, I would be willing to reconsider.
(disclaimer: i dont' recall exactly what i was paying back then; the rent i'm quoting for this form is an estimate.)
