Do not sign paperwork until you see the place

We were supposed to move in to this "renovated" unit, but they wouldn't let us see it at all until the day before the move-in (claiming that they were still working on the apartment). We went to take a look at the apartment before even stepping in the office the day before move-in, and this is what made us decide to lose the $474 rather than move in there:

* the front door was unlocked, as well as all windows
* window screens were lying around outside the apartment on the ground, in water and mud
* the appliances were ancient. We are talking brown with huge silver dials from the 80s style. Washer/dryer/stove and dishwasher all very old. If you are claiming that all your places are renovated, and charging $1425 for month, you can't stick people with ancient hardware.
* there is no way that apartment was 1000 sq feet. I know because I lived in a 1000 sq feet apartment for years. It's just not physically possible. We didn't take a tape measure with us, but I recommend you go and do your own measurements. That was the main reason why we decided not to move there after all, place was too small.
* management was not very responsive. I called twice with a question (after putting deposit down), was promised to be called back and nothing happened.
* when we put the deposit down, we wrote two checks - one for holding, one for credit check. The holding check for $400 cleared within days - the credit check for $74 took 44 days to post. Did they lose it'
* when we told them we're not taking the place over the phone, the management was flat out rude.

Overall, that place is not worth the $1425 a month. We decided to lose the money and not pack ourselves in that shady place. Do your walk through before you even give them the holding money.

These applicants need to have some correction to what is fact in regard to their statements. The facts of this is every apartment at this time is being renovated. Meaning when they came to look at the apartment it was NOT completed and shouldn't have been judged until it was completed. Our maintenance was making new screen which attest to why the screens were on the ground. They were getting replaced. They went into this apartment with no permission grated and without our knowledge while it was in the process of being worked on. An apartment can not be shown until it is ready for reasons such as this. This was made very clear to them when they applied. We also have building plans that verify square footage. As this applicant stated he did not bring a measuring tape. So our question is why would they state something they have no knowledge of. Anyone is welcome to bring a measuring tape and we have had those who have. Their evaluation of this apartment before it was finalized/complete was totally unfair. The rent for the apartment is totally fair with the market and area. The community at this time is being upgraded and soon all exterior of buildings being painted. Also for that price they were also receiving two covered open garage parking spaces with extra storage. Another thing needing to be mentioned is in regard to the $74.00 check they mentioned we may have lost...It is us that question if they have forgotten who they made the check out to. it was a totally different company who does the credit verfications. The check was not payable to this property and was out of our hands. Therefore we would not have any control or rights to cashing that check. No one was rude to them at all. They were just questioned of why they went into an apartment that was not at all ready. The leasing agent just asked for an explanation of why they had canceled with no notice, this apartment was held for a long time for the applicants desire move in date, which made this apartmet unavailavle to everyone trying to rent for that time period.
