good size, good price, I had a problem with pests and rot

I lived in one of the older buildings (closest to 140th) for about 10 years, left in 1994. The rent was incredibly reasonable and the office staff great but in the last couple of years had terrible problem with carpenter ants my unit and (yuk) cockroaches in a friend's unit in A building. There was a lot of wood used as spacers between concrete sidewalks, which made the place picturesque but also meant a lot of rotting wood appealing to the ants. Got hurt falling a couple of times when the wood was slick with moss/slime. Also, I used to sing in my apt until one night I heard someone cough downstairs and realized I was serenading my neighbors! I think the sound came up through the shared vent for above our stoves. The buildings are 2-story and the downstairs neighbor told me he had bad problems with mildew growing on his clothes in the closet but I didn't have any trouble. My unit was unbearable during hot weather -- like a crucible -- but luckily that doesn't happen too often around here. Management painted the units every 5 years or so. Ultimately, for me the price was right (when I first moved in it was $325! only increased to 600 in 10 yrs) and I stayed a long time, but the buildings were quite old when I moved in and repeated treatments for pests were finally too much for me.
