If you want a nice place, please do not move here

Hello there,
I'm going to site specific problems that happened to my husband and I, as the probability of these happening to you are probably pretty high. Please take note that, my husband and I are not TOO very picky about where we live, so if this place is terrible like I am reviewing it, you know it is bad.
1) The apartments were built in the 1970s. We actuallly found this to be rather charming at first. However, problems did arise based on this. The doors to the closets break due to the age of them, the pipes are old (see comment 2), and the walls crack and peel based on the weather.
2) Watch your water carefully. For our apartment specifically, we need to let the water run for a good 10-20 seconds before using it as it comes out of the pipes yellow.
3) Take care to lock your doors as well as your car doors. We came home one night to multiple police cars in the parking lot, another night we saw that a car's windows had been smashed in all except the windshield, occasionally we will hear gunshots (I thought these were cars backfiring at first, until I was informed otherwise).
4) When using the laundry facilities, please note the times when your laundry will be finished so you can check on them before they are finished, that is, if someone has not decided to use up each washer and dryer as is seen most of the time. It is not uncommon to find your wet clothes either on the floor or on the folding shelf due to an impatient neighbor. The same goes for your clothes in the dryer. We had our nice, high thread count, bed sheets stolen out of the dryer when I came down 10 minutes after they were supposed to be done. I've seen notices all over the laundry room with irrate people suggesting that they've had their laundry stolen as well.
5) Be very careful when driving through the parking lots. Others reviewing these apartments are very correct when stating that children run around unsupervised in the parking lots and in the halls. Some will hop in shopping carts while others push them through the parking lot, uncaring of cars that may come through.
6) In relation to #5 as listed above, please do not expect children to be well behaved nor supervised by any adult or parental figure. In our building, we have a little one who causes us grief. I was cleaning out my car and he, without my noticing, climbed into the backseat and refused to move. Unfortunately, the child seemed to not speak English and his parents were nowhere to be found. This same child on a later date found it to be a game where I would attempt to use the elevator (carrying my bags of heavy groceries) and he would stick his foot in the elevator door causing it to open again and not go anywhere. Again, parents were nowhere around and I ended up lugging my groceries up numerous flights of stairs.
This post is already becoming too long, so I will end it here. In closing, please do not move here. For your own sake, I implore you. These apartments are just awful and we received recently a renewal notice stating that they plan on hiking up the rent price to a ridiculous sum of $900-$1000 per month.
My husband and I are VERY glad that our lease is ending soon...

Oh you are so right on. I live there but I am looking. The managment for the past 4-5 years has been a Nightmare to work with. I have been here 10 years no new carpet or paint and yet my rent is going high then new tenants just moving in with ???Special??? offers. I am out of here ASAP. Essex management is taking over the north west be very careful of this company.
