My boyfriend and I considered the neighbors to be relatively quiet (although not friendly), the management was awful. They were unprofessional, rude, and deceitful. Because of this apartment, I will never rent from an Essex Property again.
When my boyfriend and I first looked at the apartment complex, the management told us about all of the upcoming renovations that were going to start within the first month of us moving in. The entire nine months we were there, they only painted the outside of the building.
They also re-roofed it, which took entirely too long and was really noisy. There was an asbestos scare in our building which the management did nothing to address (and I'm still unsure about).
The building they showed us was in relatively good shape; the apartment we moved into was in terrible shape. It had dried vomit in the stairwell the entire time we lived there, the elevator had profanity burned into the carpeting (part of which was torn out), and the whole building smelled like mold.

I agree with what you are saying. Especially about the slow renovations. I remember getting a notice on my door saying that they were going to be renovating the hallways in June 2006...its been 7 months and I haven't heard a thing from the management on that project. They never got around to re-roofing our building - but I think it is strange that they left the large truck they used to put the old roofing shingles into in the parking lot - taking up several parking spaces. Seems kind of lazy... I also wanted to point out that the indoor swimming pool & hot tubs have been out of order for over a year, but yet that is the first thing they highlight when you are browsing the apartment ads online. They didn't even both to drain it - it looks like one big cesspool of algae. I wouldn't want to use it even if they fixed it and cleaned it with industrial strength chemicals... I cannot believe they can continue to raise the rent for these apartments when they can't seem to make any improvements in a timely manner.
