I've lived here for about three months now, and I really love it.
(plus) Old, quaint building. On-site laundry facilities. Large storage stall for each unit in the basement if you ask for it. The door into the building is always locked, so that's an extra door between you and some of the weirdos who frequent the area (makes me feel pretty safe, I have never had any unwanted encounters). Plenty of windows. HUGE closets (murphy bed remnants). Convenient location (1-2 minute walk to bus stop, 15-20 minute walk to ferry). Thick walls, never hear my neighbors. Allows pets for a semi-reasonable deposit, and stone flooring in the stairwell/doorstep area prevents tracking in of fleas. I regularly see apartment staff working on improving the building, and the public areas are cleaned often. There is actually some effort put into making the courtyard area look nice.
(-) Right next to Warren Ave, a VERY busy road, traffic noise pretty much always (this doesn't bother me, but I know some people hate that). Some very obnoxious neighbors across the road who enjoy playing loud music at inconvenient hours. Right next to Burger King, and, depending on where your apartment is, their lights may shine right through your window! It's clear they put effort into updating the building, however all of my cable wires are just stapled to the walls (as opposed to running THROUGH the walls). Not the best area (located a block away from a bar frequented by drug addicts and prostitutes). Windows/fire escape aren't sealed exceptionally well in some cases, so the outside temperature is hard to keep out. There -are- showers, contrary to previous reviews: the shower area was just built to be a tub and the showerhead is on a hose hooked to the faucet. The showerhead sits in a cradle hooked into the wall. Its not a perfect setup but it works. The only real problem is that the lining for the shower doesn't really cut it entirely (there is a window, clouded for privacy, halfway up the wall -in- the shower and the walls/ceiling don't seem to take well to long showers). We just put up a shower curtain along the wall to mostly fix that.
