I haven't lived here either, however I had a horrible experience just inquiring about vacancies.
A friend of mine was helping me apartment search. We went to the managers office to ask about the property, He grimmaced and asked if it was for me or a 'couple'' & looked at my same sex friend, gave us a dirty look and before I could respond he said "No thank-you" & started to shut the door on us. Then he opened the door again and waited for me to answer, I told him it was for myself & a opposite sex roomate. He was immediately reinterested. At that point however I was extremely offended that he would discriminate like that (even though he had misread the situation), told him never mind and left.
