My Horror Stories

Years at this apartment: 2005 - 2007
I'm in my second year of living here and really, the only reason I live here is the location. Now though, I'm finally moving out of this place.
My first big problem was in 2006 when my apartment was infested with Carpenter Ants. After reading up on Carpenter Ants, I knew that I had a big problem on my hands, especially seeing the GIANT! ones with wings, indicating a colony had taken nest in the walls. My whole living room was swarmed by thousands of ants.
After informing them of the problem, they sent out their maintenance guy to look at it. I said I wanted it checked by professionals and "bombed" i.e. massive attack on the colony, not some Raid spray. They didn't. First, their maintenance guy tried something. They didn't go away. Then a man from a pest company came out. Well, all he did was drill holes in the wall and put poison in the walls, which is fine if you DON'T have a colony, but a few stragglers. I knew it wouldn't work and said as much. Any idiot could have looked carpenter ants on the internet and read that what I had was a huge colony infestation.
Well, finally, a different pest company came out. Turns out the WHOLE complex building was infested with a bunch of colonies and they had to fumigate. Yeah. So, if they had done as I asked the first time, maybe I wouldn't have had ants at my place for ONE WHOLE MONTH.
I fought for rent reduction and got it.
The year comes and goes. Now, it's late October. Outside my apartment (a different one in a different building in the complex). There was a leak outside our front door in the stairwell. Maybe it's human nature to expect people to do the right thing, for I didn't make a big deal out of it, I just informed staff of the problem. Their solution was to displace the water from the stairwell to a drain in the courtyard. For two to three weeks we've had a hose running across the paths and lawn spouting out water.
Then we get a power outage and the machine stopped working. My roommate woke up to a flooded room. Like a swamp flooded. Squish squish. Our front door area was flooded, inside and out. A corner in my room got damp. So that day was a stressful day of harshly criticizing the staff for waiting so long to do anything about the problem, and now a problem occurred that was 100% preventable. A few other apartments were flooded. My roommate and I were put up in a hotel for 2 nights, a ------ TravelLodge, the kind where you consider sleeping in your clothes. No other tenants got such accommodations, and I only think they gave it to us because I threw 2 fits in their office and talked about bringing in a lawyer.
When the plumber come out the day of the leak, turns out there was a broken water main and NOT a simple problem with the water pressure like the maintenance staff claimed, no ------- duh. I think everyone BUT the maintenance staff knew that something big was wrong. That's what happens when professionals aren't called out to asses problems, you get dumb guesses by guys who are paid to fix doors and pick up trash around the complex.
I'm still in the midst of this fix. The front lawn is all dirt from fixing the water main. Sediment spewed into the pipes and blocked water from getting through. Some people had no water for a whole weekend, though by law, that is a problem that should be fixed within 24 hours. It really sucks when you can't use your own toilet.
The management never know what's going on. Um, management is in charge of overseeing the complex, it's YOUR JOB to know. They act all nice and friendly, but never take responsibility, never know what's going on and play "innocent."
To anyone who takes residence here: be aware of Landlord/Tenant Laws and ALWAYS, ALWAYS give WRITTEN NOTICE of even the smallest problems. It gives you legal rights that you don't get if you only verbally inform them of your problems.
Or don't stay here!
