Better than reviews indicate

I think the reviews make this place sound a lot worse than it actually is. I've lived at Firdale Village for two and a half years and have no complaints. The management is polite and quick to respond to problems. Due to some work a third party company did on our building last month, we ended up with sand in our water lines, which clogged filters and ruined some appliances. I got a new water heater and laundry machine out of it, both of which were replaced within 1 day. I did have my water shut off for several hours at a time a few times in a month, but this mostly occured while I was at work and had no need of the water anyway. When my water heater broke, they did put me up in a Travelodge for the night. I went there to take a shower and came back home to sleep.

There is dog poop in certain areas, but that's really the tenant's fault. Management does provide doggy bags and trash bins on the dog trail, but some dog owner's are just lazy jerks and if no one sees them, they just leave it. I do know that management did threaten to evict a tenant if she didn't clean up the dog poop around her unit, and that area is much nicer now.

I can't comment on the hot tub as I've never used it. I have a bit of a phobia about semi-public hot tubs and what goes on in there. I have used the pool and it's pretty clean. Though with all the children who frequent it, I'd estimate the pee content at around 15%. In summer 2006 one tenant had their child throw up in the pool, so they had to close it for a few days, drain most of the water and clean it up. Then the very next week, the same child threw up again just a few feet from the pool. My neighbor went over and yelled at the parents for that and I don't remember seeing them at the pool after that.

Parking is hit and miss, depending on which building you live in. My building always has ample parking, but when I walk my dog certain around other buildings I have seen that some people have to park 2 or 3 buildings away from their unit and I'm sure that's really frustrating.

Management has raised rent on both of my lease renewals, but I started at $711 and am now paying $750. Not a big deal. I know that they have tried to raise it considerably more for other tenants, and I'm not sure why. I got a good deal on my second renewal because I mentioned I was looking around at other units (and I was) but opted to stay.

As with most apartments, I think the biggest problem with this place is the people who live in them. I've had three different tenants live in the unit below me, two of which were smokers. There is nothing worse than opening your balcony door in the summer to let some cool air in and have your apartment fill with smoke from the ----- below you who's smoking on her porch. One morning I actually woke up at 7am from the smell of smoke. Now, I've been woken up by sounds or bright lights many times, but this was the first time something smelled so foul that it woke me up. Smokers are so incredibly inconsiderate.

Last summer I had the trashiest neighbors ever in the building behind mine. It was a hispanic couple and the wife was a loud, rude, obnoxious idiot. She was constantly yelling, at her husband, her daughter, on the phone and ALWAYS in the grassy area behind her unit, so that everyone could hear her. Of course she was also a smoker. Her and her husband cooked dinner on their barbecue grill literally every night in the summer, making my place smell like charcoal and lighter fluid. The cops were called several times on the husband due to his yelling and throwing things and punching holes in the walls and doors of his unit. They were finally kicked out in August and my life has been much better since.

Some neighbors with semi-aggressive dogs sometimes don't have them on leashes. I don't mind if friendly dogs are off leash, but I don't like having my dog attacked by other people's dogs. My dog is semi-aggressive as well, but I always have him on a leash.

When assessing other's reviews, I recommend checking out their grammar and spelling. If they use "are" instead of "our" repeatedly, maybe they aren't the sharpest knife in the drawer.

well yea your right grammar sucks , but then some of us confuse the different languages, for that i am sorry, but many ppl were hurt or died when i lived there the one yr or 11 month lease. we paid for our parking and still found it difficult to acess and management did nothing. The Front part of the cmplex is like wonder land very pretty, but the back looks like a ghetto of apartment Hell. I lived in the K-Building which always had water problems and fire detectors going off, Some tenants reported ppl kicking in thier doors that did not have DOgs and things were stolen, Also the death of that poor couple and the man necxt door to me was stabbed as well as his guest , i called 911 that these things are public record, check the crime statistics of this place

I've lived in the K building for 3 and a half years and have never heard about anyone being stabbed or apartment doors kicked in. I have heard of break ins in other buildings, which management reported to all tenants in all buildings. Yes, break-ins happen and it sucks. But is that any different with other apartment complexes in the area? Parking is never an issue for me at the K building and I don't pay for a parking spot. When was the stabbing in the K building? I've never heard about that. What unit was it? I've also never heard of the death of a couple. Since I've lived here I know of one person who died...a woman in her mid 90s. I don't think that can be attributed to Firdale Village, though. The front and back of the apartment buildings look the same to me as far as landscape/maintenance go. I should know since I walk my dog all over in front and back of various buildings several times a day.

Thank you for posting such an honest review. I have found that in my search for apartments I generally can never find an apartment with a decent review. I am actually truly considering living here and I believe that all the points you have brought up are quite valid and will be taken into account.

I live in K Bldg as well...the death of the couple that they are referring to was from a fire in K109 in 2000. I've never heard anything about a stabbing. I've lived here since 2003, and I've been satisfied with everything here, with the exception of two things: the need for more recycling containers (or more pickups by the recycling company) and the HUGE rent increase last year. Let's face it, if you rent, you're stuck with whatever landlords/management dish out, and that's pretty much the way it is in all complexes. Also, apartment complexes can be conducive to crime, with so many people coming and going at all hours; it's never going to be the way buying a home in an nice neighborhood would be.
