Second Guessing

Years at this apartment: 2006 - 2009
I have lived in one of their one bedroom apartments for 2.5 years now and now I'm beginning to second guess moving after reading reviews for the complex I'm moving into even though I've had some bad experiences here. Rent started out at $545 and I'm only paying $590 now for 600 sq. feet. I've read so many stories about how people have had their rent jump nearly $200 after their first lease ran out. I think Mapplewood is really good about that. Maintenance has been great with any issues, and they are fast. They're constantly walking around checking the grounds. I did have an issue when my boyfriend moved in. He applied, and we were supposed to hear from management within a week, and he had called them a couple of times, and they said they were still waiting to get ahold of his previous renter (which is not a shock, because he could never get ahold of her). I also had a cat, but ended up swapping our cat with a dog among one of our friends, and I was told previously that if we were to have the dog, we could just change the pet agreement to dog, and it would basically be as simple as that. I would have had both the cat and the dog, but I was told that they do not accept households with both cats and dogs; it's either cats or dogs, but I read the pet agreement a few times and no where in it was that mentioned. Anyways, I got a notice on my door saying I broke a pet agreement and owed them $300 in pet fees (which was more than the pet deposit I had made when I first moved in). I immediately called and left a voice mail saying how I was upset with management and there must be some sort of miscommunication going on, because we had not heard anything about my boyfriend's application (it had been a couple weeks at this point), and that I got this pet fee notice that came off sounding a bit rude after I was told that there wouldn't be an issue. I either got a call back the same day or the next, and management was concerned, and cleared things up right away. I think they are trustworthy, because they will follow through with what they tell you. I just wish they had a fitness center. Reason I'm moving is because my boyfriend and I wanted a bigger space and to be closer to work/school, and I need a bigger kitchen. These apartments are a bit dated, but not at all bad. Some have complained about mold, which will happen in older apartments, but they tell tenants constantly in every newsletter (which we get every few months alerting us of any changes or issues) to keep a window cracked open. I have my window cracked open about half an inch, and have had no problems. It doesn't make it freezing in my apartment either. The only problem I ever had was my oven broke, and they fixed it the very next day. Oh yeah, and another tenant walked by our patio and stole my boyfriend's pack of cigarettes, which is scary because I was home alone taking a bath when it happened. Although, I'm not at all upset about the fact that it was cigarettes that were stolen since I can't stand them. It's just a privacy and safety issue, because the person had to have looked in our apartment to make sure no one was there. Another thing that highly offended me was I was leaving my apartment to go somewhere and luckily looked down as I was stepping out and noticed that one of the maintenance staff had put either a dog or cat dropping on my doorstep. I'm assuming they assumed I wasn't taking care of my dog and had had enough and was trying to prove a point. Reason I'm offended is that I DO clean up after my dog every time, and I know my dog's poop and that wasn't hers. I just thought it was a very inappropriate action and immature. I've received a few comments from other tennants that I'm the first person they've seen clean up after their pet. Another thing that bothered me was that when the person who lived above me moved out and maintenance was cleaning the upstairs I saw the woman smoking outside the bedroom window, and it smelled incredibly thick like she had been smoking in the hallway of the entrance as well. I just thought that was kind of odd with the fact that she was supposed to be cleaning the apartment. At least smoke on the balcony if you're going to do it. There have been one or two car break-ins, luckily not my car, but I think that will happen in areas that aren't gated and have high security. They also notify you if they will be doing any maintenance in your apartment via your mailbox so they know you will receive it, and they notify you of any safety issues they have been dealing with (like a car break in for example). I do see an undercover cop patrol the area almost nightly depending on when I take my dog out, which means they're doing their job with security (again, that can only do so much as well, because they're only there for a period of time). It's very quiet, and there are some friendly faces around. There are many tenants here that have been here before me, so it must not be so bad if so many have been staying over the years. There are children at play, but I'm not going to complain about them, because honestly, children are children. They make noise, big deal. I've never had a problem finding parking. Many spaces are available. It's a smaller complex which makes it feel more like a close-knit community, and it's right across from the trails to Dashpoint State Park, which I will miss dearly. I will also miss the great Gino's Bistro that is right across the street. There are no washer-driers in the units, which I do admit is sort of a pain, especially if I'm in a hurry and want to get a load done before I have to leave. I wont complain too much though. A little extra exercise walking to and from the laundry room never hurt anyone. All in all, it's definitely a decent place to live, especially compared to all the other apartment complexs' reviews I've read.
