6 Years and counting...

Years at this apartment: 2002 - 2009
We've lived here for 6 years and still counting. I haven't liked some of the fee raises, but it's not really that bad in all. They are by no means stellar, but they are inexpensive and generally OK. I have noticed some disparity between different buildings and hallways. Some are "cleaner" smelling than others, which is typical of apartment buildings with interior hallways. It varies floor to floor, building to building. Some of the units have older baseboard heaters, some (like mine) have the newer in-wall forced air. The interior hallway design saves money on heating in the winter. There aren't a lot of noise issues overall, and those that do happen are usually easily dealt with. Management seems responsive to "friendly" complaints about noise, etc. Partiers are not tolerated here for very long. As usual in apartments, mileage varies according to your neighbors.
We pay for 2 parking spaces for convenience's sake. The all-night laundry room (at least in our building) hasn't had any theft issues, so it's easy to do laundry and do other things. Our building in particular has 4 washers/dryers, which is actually a real bonus over a single in-unit machine. We can do all our laundry in an hour and a half this way, which is very nice. I'm not too keen on the in-house maintenance guys. They seem to take a lot of shortcuts and half-ass work, but if it's really a problem, typically a friendly chat with management works well.
I started in a studio, and when my GF (now my wife) moved in a month later, we moved into this unit. The carpet cleaning fees and damage fees seem to be par for the course, usually $50-$100. If you want the best negotiation of "damage" fees/carpet cleaning to get your deposit back, ALWAYS complete a checklist on move-in, and even more important, ALWAYS walk through WITH them and do the checklist before you hand in the keys. Also, it helps when you report damage, even that caused by normal wear and tear (such as chips on wall corners where metal underlays the plaster), usually they'll get it fixed, and it'll save you hassle later on. These apartments offer a yearly carpet cleaning at NO CHARGE, which is worth taking advantage of to keep your place clean and maximize deposit returns.
Overall, not bad for the low rent.
