Pretty good, all things considered

I have been here about a year now. The apartment is small, but adequate. Grounds are kept very neatly, and are well-lighted; people seem to park in their assigned spaces; there are few, if any extras, however. There are a lot of children here; sometimes a bad thing, sometimes a good thing. When I have needed maintenance, it has been very prompt. The staff is generally courteous, and respond in a reasonable time frame to my needs.

My only difficulties have been with storage space and the kitchen. Closet space is very minimal, and the kitchen is VERY small; there is also no medicine cabinet in the bathroom. In the kitchen there are only two full-sized cabinet doors above the countertop - it's not enough to keep one's dishes AND canned goods (who wants to keep canned stuff under the sink''') Stove is on one side of the kitchen; sink is opposite. On the "sink side" of the kitchen, there are no partitions underneath the sink, so anything you keep there is potentially exposed if you have a leak, or if you keep household cleaners there, as many people do. They would do well to add a couple of dividers to seperate the cabinet space. There are no cabinets above the countertop on the "sink side" at all, and they really do need to add at least a few.

The kitchen really IS a problem. The dishwasher doesn't work well, and is small and clearly very old, like the rest of the appliances; I often have to run a load of dishes twice to get things clean, even when I have loaded VERY few dishes, and it simply cannot handle anything approaching a heavy load. Also be prepared to turn up the heat on your water heater; when I moved in, the water was coming out at 99F (standard at the tap is 110F). The microwave oven is very small, and not good for much beyond making popcorn (and it doesn't even do that very well) - it's very low-wattage, and has undoubtedly lost strength with age (a common problem with microwave ovens). I finally took my own microwave oven out of storage to use. The one that came in the apartment is the sort that "hangs" under the cabinets, and takes up space that could better be used as cabinet space. The stove/oven is so old that most of the markings are worn off the handles - took time to figure out where "bake" and "broil" were! The range top/burner supports were badly twisted; the disposal is clearly the cheapest model on the market - only 1/2 horsepower. They just need to do some upgrading in the kitchen, no question.

The apartment is very open with lots of big windows, which is a nice thing. Trails in the center of the complex are generally well-kept. The play area for children is small, but neat. The blinds are plastic; they're clearly old, and quite brittle; I've had to replace a few of them because of cracking. The windows open on three sides of the apartment, so that is very nice on days when there's good weather.

There is only one heater vent in the living area; it's not up to the task of heating the living room, dining room, AND kitchen. I put a baseboard heater in my dining area, and that has helped. Heaters in the bedrooms are baseboard type, and work well. They could use better thermostats (or at least thermostats that are marked).

I'm pleasantly surprised that I don't hear my neighbors more; I have no problem with noise. Trash areas are in good shape (they ARE trash areas, after all!); there are plenty of recycling containers available, which is important to me. The washer and dryer are fine - ordinary apartment-type, and I've had no problems with them. Water pressure is a little low on the hot-water side.

All in all, I like the place; it's not luxurious, and there are some problems with storage space, but on the whole I like it here, and would recommend it.
