Pretty Grounds, Good Staff, Some Faults

Berkeley Heights (B.H.) is a good choice for people who need quick access to the valley freeway and I-5. It is a attractive & quiet complex that is built into the Kent east hillside. You are within walking distance of Office Depot, Denny?s Restaurant, Shell Gas Station & a bowling alley.
The best feature of B.H. is the grounds. Every Tuesday a crew comes to tend to them and they are superior to most other complexes in the area. The office staff is professional and caring. They are quick to take care of problems and/or return phone calls. The new Management team is obviously making an effort to create a community of residents, and are offering events for kids & families. Although, It?s a bummer when you want to go swimming and they are having their ORCA swim lessons. The Cabana is well appointed with a decent gym, free tanning (in a private room), wood basketball court, and very clean indoor pool & spa. The floorplan?s are well laid out with corner units receiving extra windows. Countertops vary from unit to unit, but most are nice and neutral. Lighting is modern - you?ll find halogen track lighting in the kitchen. Kitchen cupboards are white. Must units have a fireplace, although some don?t draft well and you?ll get some smoke in your apartment. There are plenty of telephone jacks in the apartment, but our two-bedroom unit only has ONE cable jack in the living room. The den is a great little area for an office, especially if you have an end unit. Construction of the buidings is average. Definately check the paint in the apartment your looking at, they don?t do a very good job painting them after a move-out. Also if you have one of those huge mirrors over the fireplace have maintenance remove it for you. (After all, who wants to look at themselves eating doritos on the couch night after night!)
A great option for renters is Interquest Internet service (www.interquest.net). If you need H.S.-internet,they are your best option, as there is no cable internet service, and MSN/Quest is rather slow.
All in all B.H?s good qualities outweigh the bad. However, thare are some glaring problems. 1) The parking situation is a total nightmare. If you would like an assigned space, you will pay another $30 per month. That?s if there is one available near your unit. A garage will run you $80 . The break-in?s here are about average with other complexes, but if your smart you won?t have any problems. 2) If you like TV; plan on getting a sattilite because you are LOCKED into getting cable service from Millenium (www.mdm.net). Their product offering is EXTREMELY poor and their pricing not very good. I know that P-Building can?t have dish service because of the tree line, so check before you sign your lease. 3) There is no in-complex recycling program. Only a cardboard dumpster near the cabana. So if you care about recycling, you have to cart out all of your recyclables. 4) Do NOT expect to get your deposit back. I left my last apartment here spotless and only received $15 of my $350 deposit back. Unless you have time to argue/sue, just don't expect it. 5) The mail doesn?t arrive here until about 4pm (or often later) and it takes him 45-minutes to sort it into the different boxes.
If you are looking for a good place to live in Kent, then Berkeley Heights is a fine choice. (I?ve lived in two units here since 2001.)
