What can ya expect... it's an apartment.

Apartment living is something I am not used to. Recently relocated, we decided to follow some friends that had just moved to Island Park. We didn't know the area that well and wanted to be in a house soon. Most apartments, rigthfully so, only offer 6 mo, 9mo, and 12 mo. contracts, however we were looking for something month to month or a minimum of 3 months. Our friends, in a similar situation building a house, had told us that this place offered them a 3 month contract with the first month's rent free. Could this be true''' We went and visited. It was! What we were explained is they pay for the first month and we would then be resposible for two additional months. This would be perfect. Little commitment to an apartment and the ability to familiarize ourselves with the area to get into a house.
Upon arriving, we were a little shaken when the first question asked "Is this for a 6 or 9 month lease'''" Well, it turns out the person we had originally spoken to was no longer was there. We explained our situation and began filling out the apartment contract. To our amazement, they agreement to enter a 3 month lease didn't begin until the first day of the next month. Well, this makes sense, but we had been told that we would be only responsible for two months. After much deliberation, we were given an unprecedented 2 month contract. We were grateful.
The problems have not been more on our side as they have been with our friends in our same situation. They arrived on the 4th day of the month. They signed the contract thinking they would be only responsible for two months of the "3 month lease". Well, you know where this is going. Island Park Management is forcing them to pay for a full "third months" rent as their contract stipulates. However, when they signed they were under the impression that thier "first month's" rent which was free did not count in the 3 month lease because they had signed on the 4th day of the month. Had they had know this, they easily could have come in to sign on the first day.
The other unnerving thing is they are being jipped out of the $100 referral bonus, which they give for referring another renter to the place. Island Park management is refusing to work with them.
But what can you expect....'' It's an apartment.
