Ah, memories

Years at this apartment: 1995 - 1996

My wife and I moved into these apartments shortly before getting married in 1996. It doesn't sound like things have changed much since then.

First off, as others have said, the apartments look nice. They surround a wetland area which is full of frogs. This along with the reasonable rent and the size of the place sold us on it.

When we moved in it was the rainy season. When the rain stopped the problems became very apparent. There are indeed "ghetto people" who wander around in large herds, doing their best to intimidate residents. I also got glared at every time I walked from my car into my apartment by some guy who appeared to have no other purpose but to sit in the parking lot and drink 40oz malt liquor all day.

I'm from New York, so I can put up with a certain amount of this. But there were two things that convinced me to move:

1) The woman downstairs from us complained repeatedly about noise. First she claimed that we were running our washing machine at night, which wasn't true, and then complained that we were having loud sex at all hours. Now we HAD just been married, so I'll admit we had sex. (Considerably less after being called down to the apartment managers office to discuss it, and thank you very much.) The woman also complained that she could hear me get up at night to use the bathroom, although I was unclear on why I was told that. Maybe they wanted me to use a bucket.

2) A carful of the aforementioned "ghetto people" arrived in the parking lot one night, wandered around, and then fired several shots into the ground. I went downstairs to talk to the Kent police who arrived, who only became convinced (or acted convinced) that someone had had a gun when I picked up shell casings off the ground to show to them. They filled out some paperwork and left within 15 minutes.

An hour later the car returned, a guy exited the car, emptied a gun into the apartment one story down, and the car sped off. No one was hurt, but the sliding glass door was shattered and there were bullet holes in the couch where people were sitting. The police returned, and found several marijuana plants in the apartment. They arrested the guy living there, who apparently was an ex gang member.

This apartment complex is a great place to live if you don't mind being shot at. And never have sex.
