They are great until you move out

First of all, sorry this review is so long. My roommate and I moved out of Skyline Park Apartments at the end of August 2009. A year ago, we signed a six month lease and then renewed for another six months when the first lease was over. We were at Skyline Park for one year. We were very happy with the apartment. The bedrooms are large and spacious. There are no amenities at Skyline Park. But, they are currently building a club house. (Unfortunatly, due to them building the club house, parking is terrible. I am sure the parking situation will get better once construction is finished.) The staff in the office were always nice to us. Whenever I went to the office they were helpful. So, for the most part, Skyline Park is a nice place to live. Here is the bad thing. When we moved in and signed our lease we payed a $300 deposit ($150 of the deposit is a non-refundable "administrative fee," whatever that is'') When we decided to move out, I printed a letter and gave it to the office staff. From this point on the office staff were very "short" with us. They acted like they didn't need to be nice to us anymore because we were no longer paying customers. I found this to be very unfortunate. We were excellent tenants for the year that we were there. So, we moved our things out of the apartment. I spent 3 days cleaning the apartment. The apartment looked great. (For the record, when I clean I do a good job. At the previous apartment I had, the lady that did the walkthrough told me that she had never seen an apartment that was left that clean.) All they needed to do was clean the carpet. I had even went to one of the maintenance workers and got some paint to touch up the walls. The paint in the apartment looked perfect. After I had cleaned the apartment I went to turn in the keys. I told the lady in the office that I was ready to do my walkthrough. She told me that she was too busy to do a walkthrough. I told her that I didn't want to get charged for cleaning because I did an excellent job of cleaning the apartment. She told me that when she does walkthroughs, if it looks like the tenant gave a good effort and tried to clean then she doesn't charge for cleaning. She told me that they have to pay someone to clean the apartment whether they charge me for the cleaning or not. I should not have accepted that answer but, I did and that was my mistake. I should have demanded that I do the walkthrough with them. But, I mistakenly gave them the benefit of the doubt. I said to myself, "I cleaned the apartment perfectly and they will be extremely happy." Well that wasn't the case. I got a letter in the mail about 15 days after I turned in the keys. The letter said that they charged me $60 for carpet cleaning(which is fine, I expected that.) They also charged me $75 for paint touch up and $75 for cleaning. So, in the end, I owed them a total of about $20. That isn't much money but it is not about the money. This apartment complex will do whatever they can to not give you your deposit back. I called the apartment and spoke to the manager. I asked her what needed to be painted and what needed to be cleaned' She could not specifically tell me what needed to be painted. And as far as the cleaning, she told me that they had to clean the bathrooms. I asked her what was wrong with the bathrooms' She told me that the mirrors had "smudges" on them. She said that it was probably because of the kind of cleaner I used. So basically, I got charged $75 so they could get the "smudges" off of the mirror. She did tell me that she would look into possibly adjusting the amount that she charged me so that I would not owe the $20. So, if she does that, I guess it's better than nothing. It is really unfortunate that you can be an excellent tenant for a year and then leave the apartment looking great and they will find a way to get more money from you. I guess next time I move out of an apartment, I should not clean at all. If I am going to get charged for cleaning anyway, it is not worth my time to clean the apartment for them. The opinions in this review are my opinions, hopefully it helps you out in your apartment search. I do want to point out again that we enjoyed living at Skyline Park for a year. It was just our "moving out" experience that was terrible. I hope this was a fair and informative review.
