Not quite as bad as all that...

Some people sound a bit hysterical in their reviews of this property. It's not great, I'll readily agree. We've lived here for about 6 months, and I don't mind saying I'm planning on leaving when our lease is up. However, a lot of that is because our financial situation has changed, and we'll be able to afford something better.
I was a bit concerned when we first moved here, but I convinced myself that it's only because we had lived in Silverdale (a very quiet, upper-middle-class community) and I wasn't accustomed to this kind of multicultural area. It is more urban, but that's a mixed bag. There's a higher crime rate, yes, but I also live within walking distance of my preferred grocery stores, my bank, my wireless provider... Pretty much everything I need. I love being able to leave my car at home when I run errands, and it's saved me a small fortune in gas. I have some safety concerns still--I highly recommend anyone moving into this complex to consider renter's insurance, it's well worth the price--but my car has never been broken into. My apartment has never been broken into. I've never been harrassed, or attacked. There is probably drug activity, but I'm not particularly afraid of stoners (and that seems to be the predominant group). There are LOTS of children who run about unsupervised, but I've always reacted positively to that. They are polite, and friendly, and I don't mind spending time with them when they drop by to see my cats.
We've had maintenance problems, yes, but the management has responded within 24 hours and I've been generally satisfied. Parking is frustrating sometimes, but for $15 a month you can have an assigned, covered, parking spot. It just doesn't happen to be that much of a priority for me. There are a lot of young men here, and my biggest complaint is having to listen to absurdly loud music from their car stereos at all hours of the day and night. Our bedroom faces out onto the parking lot, so it took us some time to get accustomed to that, and it still frustrates me. Otherwise, our neighbors are very kind, and occasionally the latino families around here will come by with homecooked tomales for sale by the bag. (Delicious!)
So, yeah, Washington Park isn't perfect--would I recommend it' I'm not sure. It just depends on your situation; but please don't believe that your life is in danger if you live here. From my personal experience, I can say that just isn't the case.
