The apartment wasn't that nice when we moved in. A few tiles were broken in front of the fire place, the dishwasher soap dish never closed, bathroom mirror loose, one set of blinds was rusty, another too short for the window. Even the linoleum was pealing under the stove and sink. We got some of it fixed. Upon moving out they kept our deposit and charged us an additional $160 dollars. The charge was primarily for painting and carpet cleaning. The apartments are mold prone. Black mold on the wall corners and window sills. I think they just paint over it but of course that only masks the problem. I have been out for 2 weeks and my cough is almost gone. Also, every other apt I have lived in doesn't take carpet cleaning costs out of the tennant's deposit, it's considered normal maintanence. I've actually never gotten less than a full refund, so I know how to clean! Here, they charge you regardless.
Wait, there's more! The sidewalks are very slippery when wet, so they're slppery all the time. The grounds team, who actually does a nice job normally, don't know how to shovel snow or put down ice in the winter. Parking is poorly lit. And most importantly, there is no noice insulation between you and your upstairs neighboor. They could tiptoe and it sounds like they are stomping like elephants.
All apartments have their challenges. They are forgivable usually until they charge you $160 to move out when you spent 2 days cleaning, including bleaching the walls, and after being a perfect tennant.

The office staff is polite. We never complained so I don't know how helpful they are. But always friendly.

And mysterious grey mold ate my shoes in my closet. But only MY closet. It was weird. I never put my shoes away wet either. I should send them a bill.

I will agree about the ice and snow. They did do a poor (or no) job on that. However, I lived there for 7 years and never had a mold issue. And after all that time, when I moved out, they gave me most of my deposit back. They did charge for some extra-heavy carpet cleaning but there WAS A stain in one spot so I can't say I blame them... and it was only a small amount. I don't think it's fair to say they "charge you regardless." My move-out was entirely fairly handled.
