Years at this apartment: 2005 - 2005
(March 2007) I have now lived in Shorewood Heights for 2 years. I signed a new lease last year under the new management and saw my rent go up $65. This seemed odd considering there were many vacant apartments at the time I re-signed and my friend, who has lived here four years, has never had a rent increase.
There's been a flood of SUV- and truck-driving residents moving in. Parking was difficult before and is more so now that you have to squeeze between huge vehicles the spaces simply weren't built to accommodate.
There's been a lot of very slow work around the complex the last few months. I can only guess as to what they're doing since the leasing office never bothered to send out bulletins explaining what they're up to.
I check my storage unit every week to see if my stuff is still there because the leasing office is incompetent and tried to haul off my friend's things for nonpayment (she has NEVER paid her rent late). They simply do not inspire confidence.
My lease ends in a month and a half. I will definitely be moving out. The cheap (for Mercer Island) rent isn't worth it.
(Sept. 2005) After living at the Shorewood Heights complex for about six months, I have a few new observations to share:
* If you love your car, get a garage. Or a carport. Or park on the grass away from everyone else. In five months my car has gotten more scratches and dings than it ever saw while I lived in Queen Anne - and I was a QA resident for 4 1/2 years.
* Be wary when crossing the street. People drive extremely too fast, considering that there are cats and children underfoot all the time.
* Sound and smells travel. Last night I "watched" a sitcom on my neighbor's TV. If someone's cooking you better hope it smells good because the aroma will hit you from the front door and follow you all the way to your door. And sometimes it follows you into your apartment, too.
(March 2005) Initial post below:
I moved into the Shorewood Heights complex last month. The staff is friendly and efficient. My one maintenance request was attended to quickly and to my satisfaction.
The activity center - business center with computers, fax machine; fitness center; modern kitchen; tv room - is lovely.
The location is wonderful. It's very convenient to downtown Seattle and Bellevue -no more than a 10-minute drive.
The grounds are very well-maintained. I love the greenery.
There's a great sense of community. There are events scheduled every month for kids and adults.
But I do have a few complaints.
* Parking is a bit of a problem (a staffer actually advised me to park in a fire lane).
* People disregard the speed bumps and drive too fast around the circle that runs around the complex.
* The plumbing is old. One out of 10 times when I flush the toilet the water will keep running. The toilet also runs sporadically.
* The walls/floors are not thick enough to block out noise from other units.
* The gas/water/sewage bills are not by unit, but by building. So even if you keep your heater down and run only full loads of laundry, your bill can still be very high.
* The combined washer/dryer are on the small side. They hold maybe half what a "normal" washer/dryer would.
Despite these complaints, I would recommend the Shorewood Apartments to a prospective tenant. 3mPoZ6gGN6wTPgNi4L2C
