Great Location, Bad Everything Else

Location was fantastic. DSL is available and very high quality as central office is nearby.

Many other apartment complexes on Mercer Island are being converted to condos, but Shorewood has escaped conversion thus far, mostly due to the poor structural quality of the 1940s buildings. If you live on the ground floor of the old buildings with wood floors, you will hear every noise on the entire floor of your building. The second floor has been carpeted on top of the old hardwood, so you get the worst of both worlds, thumps *and* creeks.

Parking on the top half of the complex is absolutely terrible. Most nights I would have to park on the other side of the complex. This is a large problem when trying to transport groceries.

This apartment would be great for struggling parents, who care enough about their kids to demand a quality school district without having the ability to pay for it. Be aware though, that the kids of other tenants will door-ding your car, get into fights with other kids outside your bedroom window at 9am on Sunday, and altogether annoy you out of your wits with their colorful language.

Mercer Island police routinely target the apartment complex for speed traps and late night drivers. The island police have a very aggressive reputation regarding people who do not own property on the island.

As the other reviews have mentioned, the management did go from bad to worse. The maintenance guys were unbelievably busy when I first moved in. The grounds were in tip top shape. Of course, this was only due to the fact that the place was being sold at that time. The last few months I was at Shorewood, the constant stream of golf carts carrying maintenance workers was nowhere to be seen.

Personally, I decided that paying $1,000 a month for a suburban apartment was a poor choice, when for a few $100 more a month I can take out a fixed mortgage on a $200,000 condo in the city.
