Terrible experience

I only lived here for three and a half months, but I couldn't stand it any longer. Parking is horrible; if you get home after 7-8pm, you will likely be parking on the other side of the complex, usually in between two huge trucks or SUVs, and you're lucky if you don't get your doors dinged by morning. Next, if you need to take out your trash, you have to walk 100-200 yards and try not to get run over by the cars coming and going on the one-way streets, if you're lucky. If you're not lucky, then you live in or next to a building with a 'recycling center' in it and you are exposed to the wonderful smells of untended garbage.
These buildings have been 'renovated', as the management claims. This simply means cheap appliances, storm windows that don't keep out the noise and even cheaper carpeting over the hardwood floors which haven't been maintained since the 1940s, so even my 12 lb cat made the floorboards creak UNDER the carpet. The stench in the hallways was overpowering and I had to hold my breath every time I came home, from the main door (which always slams!) to my apartment door. The smell was vile; I don't know what it was associated with, but the poorly ventilated common hallways lead me to believe its origin was from one of the apartments - maybe old people - either that or something/someone died. The walls and floors/ceilings are so thin, you can hear the neighbors watch TV or have normal conversations. And the apartment entry doors are solid wood and ill-fitted to the doorways, meaning they don't block out ANY noise. If you stand outside your apartment, you can hear sounds from your neighbor's apartments as if their doors were wide open. Additionally, the doors have been repainted (with white paint) so many times, they no longer fit properly and as a result, everyone slams their doors. Being old, solid wood doors, with thin walls between apartments, you can surely imagine how loud and unnerving this can get.
The landscaping is simple, but expect to hear leaf blowers, weed wackers, hedge trimmers and lawn mowers outside your windows as many as 3 days a week. Add on top of that an ongoing, never-ending renovation to the complex that includes poorly skilled workers hammering on your very walls to remove asbestos or replace the sidings, only to replace the noise with air compressors once they finally get around to painting the outside of your building. This went on for the entire period of my stay and they weren't half finished with the buildings. They are so poor at their job that I could hear them pull out 4 out of every 5 nails they hammered into the building.
As someone else stated, the floorplans don't make any sense and only exacerbate the noise problems made apparent by the poor construction. The only way to fix this is to gut these buildings and start over, which is what they should do.
Also, most apartments look directly at other apartment buildings, so there is absolutely no privacy. What makes this ridiculous is that the larger builings are largely vacant, being made up of 2 and 3 bedroom apartments of slightly newer construction. It's obvious that the owners of the complex wanted to maximize their cash intake by packing in as many renters as possible, but all they've accomplished is to increase density and decrease (drastically) desirability.
You may see articles about the historical appeal of Shorewood, but that Shorewood is long gone. All that awaits you here is frustration and discomfort.
