they hike up your rent when you renew

Years at this apartment: 2003 - 2004
I moved into Jefferson in Feb of '02.
The look is beautiful, but it's not as soundproof as I would expect - I can hear my neighbor pee in the bathroom and in my bedroom I can hear their tv, phone, and baby crying.
Also, they cut back many services after I moved in. The heat to the pool was turned off - and didn't come back on to the main pool until JULY. And the poolside beverage service described when I moved in never materialized. Also, the hot tub never seemed hot, the computers in the business center were very old and frequently broken, and the electricity in my unit has always been weird - light bulbs blow quickly and the light over my desk area never has worked.
As for safety - it's like any other complex. If you're not in a garage, there are car break-ins and thefts. One guy had his wheels stolen off his car. And there was a police lock-down over the summer when I was advised by an officer to stay indoors as "something was going down" (there were 5 cruisers surrounding a building).
I was given a great special when I moved in - $1080/mo for a 2b/2ba w/attached garage ($1320 was undiscounted rate). But now they want $1417/mo with a lease and $1600 month to month - as much as a mortgage payment of a 260,000 house! (new homes at that price and less are being sold in the neighborhood).
The valet trash service was nice, and I would continue to live here for $1100/mo. But not $1400. The sad thing is they are offering 6 weeks free for new leases and likely won' t get more for this apartment, but they are driving their current renters out with high renewal prices - there is a ton of turn-over here and lots of vacancies (the building across from me is half vacant). When I gave my notice, the manager was unsurprised.
Management also promised to set up my utilities upon move in but did not - I got finally a bill for 4 months of back gas and 8 months of back electricity (I was going through a divorce and did not notice I wasn't being billed)! Also, they charge you $50/mo for water and sewer - more than the 2000sf house I used to live in!
Bottom line: great for the short term if you're in-between housing like I was. But if you can afford to live here long-term, buy a house! It's not worth $1400/mo.
