You don't get what you pay for...

Years at this apartment: 2008 - 2008
We moved to the Seattle area this summer after my husband had to close his small business in the Midwest. We had no choice but to rent since we were unable to sell our home back in the Midwest. The Reserve at Town Center seemed to be a nice place from what I could tell on rent.com. I thought it was a little pricey but figured we would get what we paid for. This place is a total rip off! I've lived in other much more affordable apartments that were far superior to the Reserve. The woman that leased the apartment to us didn't even have us sign the lease until we had already moved in! The other lease agents were unhappy about this and said she did not receive the proper training. We moved into a 3 br/2 b unit since we are expecting a baby and now live so far away from family that we need the extra bedroom for when people come to see us. We moved in over the summer and our rent is $1950 a month. This same unit it now leasing for $1500 - $1700 which I think is a total rip off for us! We have had to have the maintenance come in over 10 times since we moved in here in June and it's now only October! I will say that they do come in and generally try to fix things but there is only so much they can do with the crappy building materials. The maintenance people are actually really nice and do their best to be helpful but like I said, there's only so much they can do. I could only give them 2 out of 5 stars because they do have to come back to fix things multiple times since the building materials are so crappy. Our oven didn't work and they did replace it with a brand new one so I can't complain about that. I was actually pleasantly surprised that they gave us a brand new one and got it done quite quickly. The closet door in our baby's room got stuck shut and they had to come in and basically break the door frame to get it open! The carpets bubble in some areas because they were never installed correctly. Also, they clearly were never cleaned between owners as they are quite stained. The cabinets in the kitchen are "sagging" in some areas and look as though they are coming detached from the ceiling. We had a leak on the porch from the apartment above us that poured scalding hot water all over the porch one morning for about 5 hours. The icing on the cake is the disgusting shower in the master bathroom that can not be cleaned no matter what products we use. The shower leaks and the wall on the side of the shower now has a huge hole in it where the paint has chipped away exposing brown mold and water damage. I told them about the leaky shower and wet wall early in the summer and they came to re-caulk it but it didn't solve the problem. Now there is mold and mildew there and it's disgusting. They are in the process of trying to remedy this issue but in the mean time we are not using the shower. We are on the bottom level of the building and it feels like a tiny walk-out basement. The kitchen is VERY small and there is no cabinet or drawer space. The people above us are SO loud. We can hear them walking/stomping around all the time. Sometimes it even wakes us up in the middle of the night. I'm not sure if it's because those people are just loud and inconsiderate or because of the crappy building materials. Probably a combination of both. We are okay on parking because we have a one car garage and can park the other car in the small driveway but there are always tons of cars parked on the street and it makes it difficult and sometimes dangerous to turn out of the complex onto North Creek Drive. In some areas, there is not enough lighting at night either. We have two dogs that need lots of walks and in certain areas around the complex it is pitch black at night which is not safe. The nature trail behind our unit is really super nice and one of the positives of the complex but it could use some lighting for walking at night. Another positive is the close proximity to the Town Center. It is nice to be able to walk there for dinner or coffee.
Another problem was the fact that the pool was closed several times this summer. It seems that they were always having issues with some aspect of it and had to close it. I think it's because they try to put a "band aid" on all the things that get broken here rather than fixing them correctly the first time. The pool probably needs some major repairs and they just keep putting it off. Again, not necessarily the maintenance crew's fault. I think they just do what their told and try to get it done as cheaply as possible.
They are banking a lot of money from people like us and while they do acknowledge the issues that come up in the apartment, they seem to half-way fix things the majority of the time. I wish we never signed the lease here and that we looked elsewhere. If it's at all possible, look and shop around before you move in here or make certain that you negotiate a reasonable monthly rent otherwise you won't get what you pay for. I promise. I wish I had listened to the warnings of the other reviewers! I think if the complex was more affordable I could deal with the issues here. Or, if the place was truly "luxury" I could deal better with the outrageous rent. I just don't feel that the price matches the quality.
