DO NOT MOVE HERE!

We moved in in June of 2008 when I was 7 months pregnant. I immediately got very sick. I had a horrible cough, congestion, etc. I was worried since I was normally a very healthy person. I went to the doctor 3 times and they said I needed to make sure there is no mold in our new place since that was they only other reason for my illness. I also smelled a musty smell, especially in the upstairs bathroom where the washer and dryer is and the exhaust fan (which is on a timer that runs for a few hours, every couple hours all day). I thought that was weird when we moved in since I've never lived somewhere where that was needed. I guess hindsight is 20/20.

I contacted management who had the maintenence person come and take a look. They said he didn't see anything and could only smell the musty smell if he put his head into the washer. The maintenance man was very nice but such a heavy smoker, I'm not sure if he could smell anything. I decided to look in there myself and there was lint everywhere, even up the sides of the wall. They had someone "clean" it. I came home to find no notice anyone had been there, the door off of the washer/dryer area leaning against the wall in the bathroom, lint still there and the hose was disconnected in the back I called management again who said that the hose was not disconnected but "leftover" that was left behind there. They had someone come clean it again.

After the dryer area was cleaned, I got a little better but was still sick. We asked that they have the apartment checked for mold by a mold removal company. They had their carpet cleaning company use their "black light" but didn't see any mold. We told them that it was not acceptable because there could be something in the air. We asked that they have an air quality test done. We were worried about our child already in the home and our newborn that would be living there being exposed to anything dangerous. They refused to do the testing stating it was against company policy. After about a month back and forth, we agreed to terminate the lease and pay a reduced cancellation fee due to them not wanting to do the testing.

Well, they ended up charging us the cancellation fee plus the remainder of the lease which is against what the lease says. It says you are to pay the cancellation fee plus the time you stay into the month. It then says below that you pay the cancellation fee OR the remainder of the lease (whichever is higher) until the unit is re-rented. They re-rented the unit before the month was up but still charged us the cancellation fee plus the 2 weeks we didn't live there. No matter what response they send to this, we talked to a lawyer which agreed with us.

Also, beware of their moving out expenses. We were charged over $500 for carpet cleaning. We had a dog and he did have TWO accidents that we cleaned immediately. He was never left alone in the unit. They said the carpet cleaning company found urine stains with their "black light". We were never given the opportunity to see the "black light" test when we moved in so how are we to know if those were from us' They also do not allow you to do a final walk through. We asked them and they said they don't do that. Kinda funny how they find things that you so not have the chance to see yourself. I was also told when I signed the lease that they would give us copies of the invoices for what we were charged, we weren't.

Even if this didn't happen, it still was not a good place to live. There were kids running around by themselves up and down the street (which is basically a driveway downhill)and 5 year olds left in the park by themselves at night. People did not clean up after their pets and let them run around off their leash right by the park area. We lived there in the summer and the pool was only open for a couple weeks during the entire summer. And parking was horrible!

I know that I will get a response to this saying how we are liars and bad tenants, etc. but the fact of the matter is, we were good tenants who paid our rent on time, watched our child and cleaned up after our pet. Jayme even said our apartment was "amazingly clean" when he came to take a look at the dryer. I know 3 other familes that lived there that left before their lease with up because they couldn't stand it anymore. One of them all had nose bleeds the entire time the lived there...strange. I am glad we did move before I had our baby. She ended up having a heart defect. I will always wonder if it was from living there. At least we got out of there before we had to have our infant child exposed to whatever is in there. Believe me, having to move with an infant 6 months before you planned is not an easy choice but I'm happy we did.
