When I moved in my apartment was disgusting! I waited and waited for it to be cleaned before I moved in. The maintenance guy finally said "I'll clean it right now." He used his hand and swiped the counter once. That was it. That was the cleaning it got. As new renters, my husband and I had no other choice because we had no rental history and no one else would take us! So we moved in... It took me 2 WEEKS to clean that apartment enough so we could START putting some stuff away! There was rotten food in the cupboards and old dog food in the pantry. I knew where the previous tenant kept his trash can. It was the only slightly clean spot on the floor... and it wasn't stained... most of the dirt and grime wiped right up. Gross! The balcony was covered in astroturf that was stapled down. I was afraid to remove it and see what was under it. At 8 months pregnant, it was a pain for me to haul wet laundry from the washer in the entry closet to the dryer in the closet of the back bedroom. What the'!'!' Soon we started smelling this nasty smell in the living room. I eventually found two large old pee stains by sniffing around the carpet (and several smaller spots). There were no visible stains, but as the weather got warmer, it started gagging us! One day I went into the back bedroom, to be the baby's room, which had been closed for a few weeks (baby was not born yet). The smell LITERALLY knocked me to the floor, and I had to run to the bathroom to puke. This must have been the dog's room. With a blacklight, there were almost no spots visible without urine stains. The manager/owner swore that there was no dog pee, but admitted that the previous tenant owned an unneutered pitt bull. Duh! She absolutely REFUSED to come in and take a whiff! I tried to use the "I'm afraid my cats will pee there when I move them in" ploy, but she didn't care. Come to find out, the previous tenant was a close friend of hers and still lived in the complex in a nice, newly recarpeted and painted apartment downstairs... with his dog. Evidently he just allowed the dog to pee on the floor instead of letting him out, because he lived there until I moved out, and I saw that dog out ONCE. I spent hundreds of dollars trying to get rid of the smell, but nothing worked. Luckily, my cats never peed anywhere in the apartment. We had a problem with the electricity once... light bulbs kept exploding, and power surges were ruining all of our appliances. The maintenance guy told us the color of the light bulbs we were using was wrong, and that's what caused it. WHAAA'!'! Electricians I've mentioned this to have rolled on the floor in hysterics! We finally got a shower curtain rod about a week before we moved out, after we'd given our notice. The kept asking what we did with it, and we kept showing them the move-in walk-through... It said "no shower curtain rod-needs new one." So they'd ask what we did with the new one. Where they for real'!' The list is never-ending. From loud parties, bass knocking pictures down, neighbors chasing my cat away from my porch (seriously- he was sitting on my mat AGAINST MY DOOR!); to people knocking on my door looking for their dealer who lived in another building but they couldn't remember where. This place was ridiculous! When my baby started to learn to crawl, we high-tailed it out of there. I decided that just to show them who was the bigger person, I would clean the HELL out of that place... and I did. I washed the windows inside and out, cleaned the oven, replaced the drip pans, mopped the floors, shampooed the carpets, bleached the bathroom, scrubbed the walls and ceilings, scrubbed the balcony, etc., etc., etc... They charged me a $30.00 cleaning fee! Then they sold the place, so I had no one to go after to get it back! I was in sheer disbelief! It's been two years now, and I love my new apartment (check out Fern Ridge on Fern St, its awsome!) I still hang on to the pictures of the disgusting condition of the apartment and the mold that grew in the windows and on the carpet just in case someone takes the time to track down the previous owner and open a case. I just don't have the time or energy, and I guess its not worth the 30 bucks they owe me! I haven't heard any better reports from friends that still live there since the new owners took over, but PLEASE use caution in deciding whether or not to live here! Look at several apartments if you can so you know how kept up they really are, and talk to current tenants if possible! BE CAREFUL!
