They've finally priced me out of my home of 17 years. Oh, and a warning.

Yes, I moved into a lovely brand new one bedroom apartment at the Cambrian, in the good old days. It was a lovely community where the management actually knew your name and cared about you as a person. Whenever they had a move-in special, they applied it to the lease renewals too. I've always been a believer that when you are a landlord, you not only have a responsibility to keep the grounds and apartments well maintained, but there is also a human responsibility, afterall, this is where people live, their home, and with their business practices, there should also be a humanity clause. However, now that Archstone owns the property, nobody knows who I am, cares about me or the hardship they cause when they raise the rent beyond my means. Their only obligation is to protect themselves from litigation by at least giving us time to find another place to live.

So, I'm afraid, like another poster who makes 60k/yr, it's not enough income to live here anymore. Isn't that a very sad turn, that with this decent income, we're being forced to move. I'm from the old school where landlords wouldn't think about getting rid of a good tenant. In all of these years, including one year of unemployement in the 80's, I never missed a rent payment. I'd say I have been a desireable tenant.

Here's the warning. You MUST keep your eye on the market prices when living here because, if you're paying 1500/mo. and the market prices go back down to 1200/mo. You will continue to pay 1500/mo. even with your lease renewal. Why' Policy that they don't automatically lower people's rents, you have to ask. That's why I have made it MY policy to ask each year since I went two years being over charged and would have continued to be but I overheard a new tenant signing his lease for a lot less than my new lease.

It is a very nice place to live, that's why I've lived here all of these years but it can no longer be my home unless something changes. Never in my wildest dreams did I think this was going to happen to me.
