I currently rent a house in Ballard, but I was only able to do so due, in part, to living at the Cambridge. First let me state the obvious (which has been overlooked in many of these reviews): this complex is low-income housing (50% and 80%, when I lived there). Complexes like the Cambridge give people an opportunity to have roof over their heads.
Karen is human, like all of us. She does the best with what she's got. I faced my own frustrations with the office being closed when I wanted a package, but one would be hard-pressed to find many Apartment Offices that are ALWAYS open every time you needed something. Karen enforces the rules that are set by the Housing Resource Group. (I noted that no one commented on the frustrations with the renting PROCESS.)
The Cambridge used to be quite the drug haven. And, many of those influences have been removed.
AS for security: since the Cambridge does not have studio apts going for $1100 (like on the "Hill"), security guards and concierges are not an option. So, everyone must pitch in. You see a door ajar, close it. If someone left your back door open, would you leave it open and then complain about that act.
Here's the run-down: Apartments facing Freeway Park are subject to the Greenhouse Effect during the summer (so, buy a fan or an AC window unit), but have good lighting throughout the day. Apartments ending in "03" tend to have great airflow: two windows in the living area, perpendicular to each other, and one window in the kitchen. Good lighting in the "03" apts throughout the day. I cannot speak for the rest of the Apartments.
Two laundry rooms (8-10 washers, 16 dryers) that are mopped every morning with working machines.
Management (i.e. Karen): If you work with her, she will work with you. Hostility breeds hostility. In the two years that I resided there, my packages were NEVER opened. I never felt that I was in jail or that my privacy was invaded.
Quality of people: Full range. ----. Straights. Collegiate: I knew a Poli Sci Major. Artists: I knew a composer, an actor, and a graphic designer. Young Entrepreneurs. Techies: I knew a couple of computer/web design techs. HIV . HIV-. Pot smokers. I digress, you get the point.
If you are looking for a place to live while you trying to get on your feet, this is a good place to be.

How odd that a person who now "owns" a house would still bother to write about this apartment building . . . silly me, she's Karen's sister. Please none of us could tell you the EXACT amount of dryers.
