Well i'm a resident that has now been here for about three months and i'm O.K. with the apartment; not extatic but O.K.
Pros: One FREE secure garage parking space. My unit has laundry (electic washer and dryer) in the unit as well as the building has a laundry (coin-op) room. My unit also has a dish washer and garbage disposal. Decent size, semi-private balcony with dual sliding glass doors, one to the living room and one to the bedroom. Decent size bathroom and kitchen. Large bedroom with walk in closet. Adequate living room size, if you don't expect to place a large dining room table in the "dining area". I suggest you learn to eat at a breakfast nook sized two person table or just use the entire room as just a living room. And finally my rent of only $955 for the North Admiral area of West Seattle is average to slightly under market for first quarter of 2008. By the way, $955 includes water, sewer, garbage.
Cons: Number one complaint so far is the heating. I have baseboard electric heat and my first electric bill was almost $200 A MONTH! The large dual sliding glass doors do NOT seal well nor do any of the windows. All the glass is double pain, however it is OLD and not energy efficient or sealed worth a damn! The old-skool analog thermostats for the electric baseboard heaters don't seem to be accurate nor do they hold a steady temp or even "range of temp"! They are just ON and OFF,... the dial says 50 the room is 75. The dial says 75 and sometimes the room is 50. The hot water heater is NOT wrapped and i can hear it click on and off all the time, even when i'm not using any water, seemingly just tring to keep the water in the tank hot. Plus, all the appliances are older NOT energy star compliant. I will try to work with the owner/management to have some of these issues resolved, but if you come here expect a big electric bill at least in the winter months. Second, third, fourth, and all remaining complaints are stupid little B.S.,... No BBQing allowed, no second parking spot available even for extra $$$, no visitor parking, very poor street parking, no storage beyond your unit, small (almost dangerous) assigned parking for sub-compact cars with no need of any clearance in lenght, width, or hieght!, bad smells in the underground garage (exhaust, laundry room chemicals, and sometimes the smell of sewer/sewage but no visible poo.) Ugly entrance and hall ways. Blah blah blah... standard older building city life blues.
Bottom Line: Expect around $12001400 a month to live here. (Rent, power bill, phone/cell, cable TV, internet, etc...) Some may pay less some more, but if you budget for $1200 to $1400 a month, you will be able to live in the College Street Apartments in the nice North Admiral District of West Seattle, a block from the Admiral Theater, a block from the Admiral Metropolitan Market, and only ten minutes from Downtown Seattle.
