Look, if you want a modern penthouse with a concierge, this isn't your pick. But if you want a cheap place with character and affordability, you can't beat the Downtowner. It's blocks from Puget Sound, right next to Chinatown and Qwest Field, and a short walk to Seattle's Downtown and Pioneer Square. So right off the bat, you've got location. Yes, this is a low income apartment, but only the most prejudiced renters would skip out because of other tenants. Sure, you've got shady characters waltzing around the area, but would you rather live in suburbia' This place has 24-hour security, 9 stories (many with awesome and/or interesting views), high ceilings, and yes, charm. It used to be a hotel for sports events in the '30s and '40s, so it's got atmosphere as well. And it's right next to Uwajimaya, and feet from a huge bus hub, so you've got basics.

This isn't a place to start a family, but if you're a single person with an open mind, don't shy away. It's certainly a unique pit stop. And if you're broke, it's a haven. Hell -- with water, garbage, sewer, and electric included, only a brat would complain. In my opinion, this is one of Seattle's secrets.

P.S. How to beat roaches' I haven't seen one in 12 months. Yes, I know how to do it. Here's what you need:

Joint compound
Door sweeps
Roach hotels
Bengal Gold roach spray
Cockroach gel
Boric acid / Hot Shot

The most important step' Block all entries. If they can't get IN, you can stop them. You need to spend time looking at holes in your apartment. (This can be fun). Fill any openings and hiding places with joint compound. Cover the bottoms of your doors with cheap Home Depot sweeps. Then place hotels under your fridge, sinks, and corners. Spray everywhere until the can is empty. Gel in dark areas. Boric acid along walls and behind shelves. If you do all this, you will have a fortress.
