We moved in because the rent was cheap. Our unit had no view at all, and was very close to Madison St.
Between the nearby fire station, police department, and numerous hospitals, there were constant sirens. Frequent fights at the 7-11 across the street woke us up in the middle of the night.
There was no parking available, even for our motorcycle. Street parking was usually easy to find, except for Friday evenings and Saturdays, thanks to the temple right next door.
Several repairs we were promised before moving in were never done after repeated requests over a year and a half. A few other repairs were made to the unit, but never sooner than two months after originally requested, and never after only one request. Machines in the laundry room were frequently broken. The bathroom was covered in black mildew that wouldn't budge for any cleaning product.
At one point all of the toilets in the building were replaced. I was told this was because tampons had clogged all of the pipes, and residents weren't to use tampons. Never in 30 years have I heard of a plumbing problem like this.
I experienced an entire pregnancy while living there, and the place made it much more difficult. The stairwells are pitch black at night. There is lead in the pipes. The staircase in the back, which leads to the laundry room and trash, is dark, slippery, narrow, steep, and has a railing that's hanging halfway off the wall. I often had to park several blocks away, carrying groceries all the way back and climbing the rickety, dark stairs.
Still, the rent was very cheap, and the location was decent. It's fine if you're not picky - or pregnant!
