I rented a studio on the first floor. The building is old. I'm guessing, it was probably once affiliated with the church across the street at one point. So you get the creaks from the floors as you would expect. I personally love old charming buildings. This place would be better with a few renovations though. At the time of my move-in , the on-site management was a nice artist couple (who eventually moved to another building but still managed the place). I had no problems getting anything fixed. When first moved in, I could tell that the previous tenant was a smoker & the unit wasn't cleaned very well (which I think isn't a requirement according to law) but at least they painted. I also made sure to put in a work order immediately for little things that needed to be fixed such as new window blinds and having the drains cleared, which were fixed promptly. There was a leak a unit above mine where I wasn't affected until the Summer when the paint in my hallway started to peel due to the heat. It was also fixed promptly. I liked my walk through closet and the extra big closet in the living room. My neighbors where nice and I loved the location most of all because I like the city life. Complaints; well I wish that my studio was updated. The kitchen had a ridiculous tile counter-top which was not useful but I made do. The bathroom had a sink cabinet that did not fit in its space properly. It also had a claw-foot tub which made cleaning around it tough & I've decided that I do not like those tubs at all. The trash bins are not secured so neighborhood homeless people would rummage through them, sometimes making a huge mess. There's a couple of rooms for rent in the basement with a shared kitchen and at one point I think a couple of the tenants & their visitors were kind of shady(but then a couple of 'normal' guys moved in). So, personally I felt safety was touch & go every few months but nothing major, it's good to be cautious & aware no matter where you live. I've heard that the property owners RPManagement.com company does NOT have a good rep. with all its properties but luckily that wasn't my case.
