Melrose Woes

Consider carefully other options before signing a lease at Melrose on the hill. The apartments show very well. New kitchens with granite countertops and nice cabinets. Clean bathroom with washer/dryer combo, etc. But be careful as it is misleading. Once you settle in, you will notice the thin walls and creaky wooden floors. You will be woken by the neighbor upstairs walking in the bedroom above yours and you will hear music from adjacent units.
Do not even consider a unit facing east (the back of the building). If you are on the ground floor, it might appear nice to have a small patio in the back, but the stone wall behind is infested with rats.
If you are above ground floor on this side of the building, it will feel like your neighbors are right inside your apartment as they talk and smoke outside on their patios. Street noise is high as both Melrose and Belleview Avenues are busy. Music from the Chapel bar is audible during the weekend. The building behind burned down in a fire and you can hear people late at night talking and breaking glass bottles in the parking lot.
The management has deteriorated considerably. After a few months in the building I couldn't get a response on at least 5 attempts when both an email AND a phone call were placed. There is no management on site. I had to resort to grabbing the manager whenever I saw him around the premises, which didn't happen often.
All of this on top of the fact that the rent is on the higher end (>$1200 - 1 bed/1 bath) means you can do a lot better for the money.
