I lived at the 1000 Eighth Aveāformally the Nettleton--for three years under the former management and the former name. It was excellent. Now it has all the elegance of Home Depot. I am deeply saddened to see that Seattleās First Hill has lost a landmark and home to so many people who had been there for decades. Many of these residents, who are students, elderly, and disabled can no longer, afford to pay the rentsāsome of which have more than doubled within the last year.
The name isnāt the only thing thatās changed. The lovely, traditional look of the building has been ruined. Welcoming carpeting, draperies, and furnishings have been gutted and replaced with exposed concrete pillars and a high-tech design that violates the architecture of the building and the spirit of the neighborhood. The new management boasts the new building is in a family neighborhood, but First Hill is a cosmopolitan area that is home to students, ----, and the elderly. Most of its residents have low to moderate incomes. They donāt care about having a faddish decor.
Beyond overlooking the neighborhood culture, the new management has neglected making critical, structural improvements. The building sill looses much of its heat through its single plain windows. It is poorly insulated, and poorly heated. Bottom line: the new management has put the money in the wrong place. It has ruined a wonderful building that has been home to a a lot of good people.
