I have to say that living in Belltown is often an extreme sport; dodging junkies, evading dealers, hurdling petty crime, wrangling homeless and panhandlers. But I chose to move here and the Shelby and staff have made it a sanctuary in the midst of this up and coming neighborhood.
Downtown living: If you want to live downtown The Shelby is a great location. Smaller than many with under 100 units you get the opportunity to meet your neighbors easily, if you want. The bldg is badge access secured and the video cameras peppered about the property do record and are saved. Short of having a door attendant, you cant ask for more in the way of security and since it is small and most of us know each other, we also look out for each other. The management even aided in organizing a neighborhood security meeting where members from law enforcement and the mayors office were present, other apartment managers and residents in Belltown were invited and I believe the Charlesgate was the only other one present, the rest being condo and small business owners. I mention that to show the Shelbys commitment to their residents safety.
Noise: Its a great downtown location but living downtown comes with people. Everything from the homeless guy singing to himself on the street at 4:00am to the prick who graduated from UW and is celebrating with his frat brothers at the top of their lungs. 18-year-old kids from the Art Institute dorm next-door who are away from home for the very first time in their lives carried away with their newfound freedom. If you cant get back to sleep call or e-mail the office w/your complaint, but the quickest response after business hours is always to call the cops, if you dont get satisfaction there, take it up w/the mayor.
From apartment to apartment, there is minimal noise transference. Youre more likely to hear someone in the hall passing your door. I have had a noisy neighbor in the past, sharing is good but not always welcome, and the Shelby management worked with us to make everyone happy and it was no big deal for anyone involved with the matter settled in less than 48 hours.
Pets: The Shelby does accept cats and dogs (call for restrictions/rules) for which I am very grateful. They do NOT allow or encourage animals to urinate or defecate anywhere in the bldg. Accidents will happen and unfortunately, there are irresponsible pet owners in the world. A call or e-mail to maintenance has fixed the accident readily enough in the past. The halls and elevators are steam cleaned once a month and for a few hours afterward theres that soapy, wet smell but its part of carpet cleaning and that smell dissipates w/in 24 hours.
Amenities: The Shelby offers a small gym adequate for the fitness needs of the average resident. There is also a large clubroom for residents to reserve and use free of charge. This summer they added a large grill to the second floor terrace for residents to use and enjoy at whim. Ample parking in the underground garage, which you do pay extra for but its less expensive than many of the area surface lots and very convenient. Not every unit has a great view but they each have chic dīcor, new appliances, and washer/dryer.
Ive lived here for a year but have spent the last 15 years in apartments and find the Shelby to have the most caring and responsive management team EVER. The neighborhood is not the best but its not Pioneer Square either and Shelby management is very active in working with the mayors office to better Belltown for everyone. As for the bldg itself, the only thing Id change is to add the option of air-conditioning because Im a wimp about heat.
