I have lived at the Shelby for a long time. To date, I have nothing but great things to say about how the building is managed. The staff is courteous, friendly and has handled every issue I have ever had with professionalism.

After reading the reviews most were left in regards to the neighborhood or behavior of those living outside the building. I am not quite sure how those working at the Shelby are supposed to control others behaviors' They work very hard to meet with city officials, hold meetings for residents to attend (which most don't) and have had a email set up for those to place security and safety complaints. They have delegated an individual to monitor this email daily and use to provide feedback to the city council, surrounding apartment managers/staff and the Seattle police. To date, only one individual has utilized this. I know this as I am the individual handling this email and working with the building management.

How can so many people complain about other adults behaviors and hold the apartment management responsible' (The Shelby outlines the rules and also has consequences for those who don't follow them). They can not control crime, student housing or criminal activity. It is something that goes along with living in the neighborhood (which I might add is decreasing significantly). Belltown is a great neighborhood with issues like every city but minor compared to most.

If this sounds "pro" Shelby, well it is supposed to. I had to chuckle, if someone doesn't get their security deposit back, it is stated in a letter as to why' I mean seriously, clean up after yourself, don't break things or let your pets ruin carpet. Sure we have residents who are disrespectful and let their pets pee on the carpet, don't pick up their "poo" outside the building, but how is the Shelby management supposed to control this' Wouldn't this just be adults behaving badly' They have fines if those people are caught and they typically within 2 weeks have the carpets cleaned and things picked up promptly. If someone doesn't want this to happen on rare occasion with pets then pick a building that doesn't allow. It is that simple.

If you don't want city noise, homeless, and crime activity...move to Issaquah or a suburb. Better, yet, be a proactive adult and attend the meetings held, write your emails and be a proactive part of the community.

The majority of the issues with security have been because residents buzzing people in when they do not know them, dont' wait for the gate to shut on the garage or let those they do not know walk in behind them. We live in a secure key pad building for a reason. 2 months ago I came in to a homeless man sitting in the lobby who was buzzed in or walked in after someone. I called the police and had him removed. However while standing there several other residents walked by and stated "oh, he is still here'" I asked if they called anyone and they all stated "no". So...once again, no one took a responsible action for where they live. He wouldn't have gotten into a secure building in the first place if a resident didn't let him in. Once again, the responsiblity of the residents not the management. When other issues have arisen that haven't been tenant caused, the Shelby management and owners have acted immediately to reinforce locks, change garage gates, add security cameras, etc. Money typicall spent to increase safety when in reality, other residents should just not buzz those in they don't know, don't let others walk in behind them and should wait for the garage gate to close behind them before driving in and out of the garage.

I find this site kind of useless considering anyone can leave feedback without truly anyone truly knowing if they have lived here or not. However, had to reply since some of the postings irritated me. Can't wait to see the replies back.

I really appreciate your comments. We are considering the Shelby to live. We are relocating from out of state and my husband works in Belltown and has been there for 5 months in a studio at another place. It's nice to read a review about the reality of the situation of living downtown and knowing the management is doing all they can to look out for their residents. Thanks for the insight!!
