surrounded by junkies

When we moved to the Shelby years ago, we really loved the location, it was so close to everywhere, movie, restaurants, shopping, etc. Today, it is the worst location in Belltown. Blanchard street between third and fourth are full with junkies all the time, drug dealing takes place day and night, we can't even walk to first avenue anymore since it is not safe. Just last weekend a homeless person made a bed in the alley and was sleeping and talking to himself. It is really sad to see such a great location get wasted.

I lived at the Shelby from November 2002 - November 2006 and I remember that always being the main / only problem with the Shelby. It got so bad that there was a gunfight one morning, and for months the cops cracked down hard, and the area cleaned up. I'm guessing you moved in during that "cleaned up" period, and that things have since gotten worse again. I agree that that is not the most desirable thing to have in your "backyard" but I had a very hard time finding a better apartment complex in Seattle after the Shelby, and things were just as bad in terms of drug-dealers / homeless drug-users at my next apartment (The Heights on Capitol Hill), which was much worse than the Shelby in every other way. I regretted moving from the Shelby and I've since moved to Redmond to get away from it all anyway. ;) Anyway, I totally agree with you, that is not a safe / clean micro-neighborhood at all, but the Shelby itself was (at least when I was there) a much better apartment complex than most others in the city.

You have to take reviews like this with a grain of salt. You could be in any apartment in Belltown and have the same experience since many of the public/social services offices are here. If anything, the 4th and Blanchard location is much quieter than most other blocks. I'd much rather be on 4th than any of the lower numbers.
