Years at this apartment: 2004 - 2006
We moved into the Village on 7th Apartments two years ago. At that time, they were clean, there was tons of parking (a lot of the units were vacant), a socially weird but responsive manager, and the rent was nice & low for the 2-bedroom apartment we rented. When we moved in, we were promised a mantle for our fireplace if we renewed our lease the following year, and we were given rent discounts for referring two friends to move in to other apartments in the complex.
In the year that followed, I was verbally assaulted by the manager's boyfriend, the manager herself was fired and replaced, and we realized just how thin and un-insulated the walls were when we could hear upstairs neighbors PEEING AT NIGHT... let alone everything else. We had no choice but to listen to our neighbors have sex, vacuum, go to the bathroom, run baths, play music, etc.... very, very noisy.
We planned to move after that first year, but wound up deciding to stay so we could focus on paying down some bills while we still had relatively low rent. Our rent was increased somewhat when we renewed our lease, but nothing major. However, that mantle we were promised never materialized, and the fireplace left a film of soot all over the wall and ceiling.
The manager at this time was a really nice lady, organizing events for the kids in the complex, etc. But I guess she didn't work out, because suddenly ---- Woman replaced her. ---- Woman is mean and old and crotchety and hates dogs. She clicks around the complex in her heels and blames the wrong tenants for dog waste around the common areas. Our friend has a shiny little sportscar that she garages all winter, and she pulled it out the other day and parked it in the lot, and ---- Woman had it towed without warning, for no reason at all. I could go on for a long, long time about how mean and rude she is, but I'm at work.
The other new development is the children in the parking lot. Swarms of them, I'm not kidding. They run all over the place, leave their bikes laying all over the walkways, play on our private patio and destroy our plants, bang on our windows to goad our dog. When I go outside to ask them to stop, these five year olds look me challengingly in the eye and do it again to see what I'll do. We must have a posse of bad mothers in the complex now. It's obnoxious.
Also, in the two years we've lived here, we've had a bike stolen from our front doorstep and a ceramic sun stolen from our patio wall - and someone gauged our garage door, trying to bust it open. Obviously that's not the management's fault completely, but security is lacking completely.
If you're looking for a temporary home and don't mind hordes of kids running rampant all over the place and don't need privacy, go for it. Otherwise, I definitely don't recommend this place.
