I lived in Allenhouse Apartments from 1997 to 1999. It was an average place to live. I'll go through the pros first. First, location. It is a very convenient commute to UW and to downtown Madison's State Street. It's a bit of a long walk but a pleasant and short bike ride. Also, Allenhouse Apartments is located on the busline. The apartment has an indoor pool and sauna in the basement. The pool area feels a bit cellar-like and doesn't get used often. There is also a lounge area with a T.V. and chairs/sofas. Neither the pool area or the lounge area are very well lit and they aren't very pleasantly decorated but nevertheless they are nice to have access to. The apartment price included all utilities. The apartments can be rented with furnishings and all are equipped with air conditioners. There is a garbage chute so garbage disposal is very convenient. Laundry facilities are available on each floor.
The CONS of the place. The apartments are quite small and poorly constructed. I could hear the person living above me walk around his/her apartment (the floor squeaked loudly). I could also hear people conversing as they walked by my apartment despite having both my apartment door and bedroom door closed. The apartment building smelled badly. It may have been partly because of the garbage chute but the smells of people cooking dinner was also very noticable. The management did what they could to make sure the building was secure but often times residents purposely left the door to the apartment building open to anyone. Management was not readily available. This was probably due to a poorly run management company overscheduling its employees to handle other properties. During the two years I was at Allenhouse, the apartment manager changed four times. The apartment managers were friendly but not very effective due to their short term of service.
All in all an average place. I highly suggest a top floor apartment far away from the garbage chute if you choose to live here.
