I was in a major rush to find an apartment when I moved into Lincoln Ridge. While I didn't have time to do much research, it turned out to be a tolerable first one-bedroom apartment for me.
I didn't have any major problems -- the appliances consistently worked, the air conditioning and heat consistently worked, the apartment was clean upon moving in, it was a decent looking (although faceless) place, and I lucked out with a quiet building.
The biggest problem was the shoddy and cheap construction, which was most apparent in the winter. The windows, while large and attractive, were exceedingly drafty -- enough that if the heat wasn't actively running, the apartment got chilly in minutes. I typically closed my bedroom off during the days and, upon getting home, would find that it got crazily cold, even though it had its own heat source (thanks, two windows). The bathroom floor, tub and toilet were painfully cold on winter mornings (thanks, bathroom window) and standing by the living-room sliding doors in the winter chilled my legs. When it got really frigid and windy in late January and again in mid February, the water line leading to my toilet froze, so I had ice buildup inside my apartment and probably on the other side of the wall. Luckily I discovered it right away and got a quick response from a really nice maintenance guy. Regardless, when it got cold I had to use a space heater to keep my toilet working and pipes safe. Not cool.
The heating/air conditioning system was loud, as many others have mentioned, and I had to talk louder and turn up the volume on anything in the living room to overpower it. A sizeable water spot developed in my kitchen ceiling a few days before my lease ended. The hallways often smelled like stale smoke. I had a fireplace, but the chimney leaked and made creepy noises when it was rainy and windy. I dug the cathedral ceilings I had. The balconies were huge. I wish I'd had more of a use for mine, but the view of a parking lot wasn't that great. Speaking of parking, it was a real hassle, especially in the summer of 2006; the lots were usually packed and only once in my two years of residence did they put notices on unauthorized vehicles. I didn't even have my permit in my car during the first or last six months of my stay. The snow removal sucked. It was usually late and people got parked into stalls and their garages all the time.
The location would have been nice... if I was heavily into shopping and maneuvering around people who suck at driving. It was convenient (Woodman's, anyone'), but the suburban-commercial-shopping-zone thing isn't quite right for everyone.
The office employees were nice. Maintenance usually didn't come when I requested (on Saturday), which meant the caulking jobs (my usual request) didn't get to dry for 24 hours because I -- get this -- work during the week and, yes, had to take daily showers. The pool and fitness room are played up but mediocre.
After two years of living there, it's clear that Lincoln Ridge is like most big apartment complexes. It's impersonal; yet, a tolerable place to live in a safe and apparently sought-after part of town. Worth $715 for a one-bedroom place' No. The buildings are obviously aging and need more substantial repairs than temporary fixes (e.g., painting over problem areas). You could probably do worse, as the necessities are there, but do your homework before deciding to live there. And have an appreciation for cold temperatures.
