Good, Bad, and Ugly

I lived in Maple Grove for 12 months during 2001/2002.

I?ll begin with the good things about Maple Grove:
  • The complex is in a newer, quiet neighborhood. The low levels of traffic mean it?s a pretty nice area for walking or biking.
  • Most of the buildings in the complex are pretty small, and therefore not very dense. This helps keep it quiet and makes it a more attractive complex than many others
  • They allow cats and small dogs. It?s hard to find a nice place close to Madison that allows dogs, in my experience.
  • The complex has a pool, hot tub, and workout facility, all of which are of reasonable quality. The workout facility, in particular, is one of the better aparment exercise facilities I?ve seen in Madison.
  • The complex is mostly pretty new, and the building and apartments generally look pretty nice because of it.
  • There is a decent grocery store conveniently located about a block away. There are also a few takeout restaurants, a good video rental place, and a gas station.

Next, the bad/ugly things that prompted us to move out:
  • The apartments are really not convenient if you need to go into the city every day. In fact, we didn?t even need to get all the way into the city, just to the University. It can easily take 25 minutes to drive in in the morning. I don?t consider that to be convenient.
  • Another down side is noise. There seems to be no noise insulation in the buildings, so you always hear your neighbors walking around, etc.
  • The maintenance here is very, very poor. It usually takes them several trips, and they usually still don?t fix it. We had three issues we called them about, and often we called them more than once. They addressed all three at various times, but all three were still problems months later when we moved out. The rain gutter on our building was broken off and hanging on for dear life for the duration of our stay. The only common areas that are ever cleaned are those in the main building (where the office is). I don?t recall our hallway ever being cleaned, and the garage and especially the dumpster area were filthy the entire year we lived there. And while I?m on the garage topic, the garage door in our building was broken constantly. Kind of hard to get to work in the morning when you can get your car out of the garage! (And no, I?m not lazy -- I did try to open it myself. But the door would literally break its guide rails and wedge itself in a manner that would usually prevent you from manually opening it.)
  • While I rated the parking as 'adequate', that's really only if you have the underground parking. For some reason the outdoor parking always seemed to fill up. In fact, usually to the point where a lot of people were parking on the grass. I'm not sure why this happened, since there appears to be a lot of surface parking and most of the buildings also have underground parking. It was often tough for our visitors to find a place to park.
  • Maple Grove also makes you sign a form saying you?ll have the carpets professionally cleaned when you move out, which is just wrong.
