Owner is AWFUL - but good location

My first huge headache with the owner was when I was changing between units, into a bigger space. When my old lease was up and I was to start a new one, the office manager told me I could have a week or so to move and clean etc. because they had at least 2 other units that were identical available so there was no hurry. A few days later when Bonnie found out about this she called me at 8 in the morning and screamed and swore her head off on the phone. I told her that her own office person gave me a week, and she said that it was bull$hit and went on and on swearing like a sailor and being a complete ----- to me. Furthermore, she charged me for so much stuff in the apartment that I was moving out of that it was almost my entire security deposit... the thing is, my apartment was like the rest of the building - old and crappy, including my appliances (the refrigerator didn't even have a freezer, it had a tiny icebox inside of it) - and she tried charging me for things like drapes (which my apartment never had when I moved in), painting a wall which they claimed wasn't the right shade of white (the thing is, I never painted my walls at all, white or otherwise), my closet doors never worked, one of the shelves in the closet that was broken when I moved in, a cr4ppy showerhead in the bathroom that was cr4ppy when I moved in... it was a nightmare.

After all this, Bonnie told me in our phone conversation that she was going to be watching me and if I was ever just one day late with my rent she would give me a 5-day notice and then evict me the first chance she got. She flat out said this on the phone to me! When I didn't pay her right away I was told that she was just going to take the money out of my current security deposit and then I would be in violation of my lease and blah blah blah... I told her that I knew that would be illegal and they didn't say it again, but seriously, if I wasn't an intelligent person they would've went ahead and tried something like that.

Bonnie owns the two parking lots that are on the north and south side of the building... this winter there was a blizzard, and Bonnie didn't send over anyone to plow the entire day. There were 4 of us stuck in the parking lot, and it took the parking lot attendant, and all of our muscles to get our cars out... it took over 2 hours to get out of the parking lot that day! When I went to ask the maintenance guy if he could use the snowplow (which he was already using on the sidewalk in front of the building) to help us out, he said that Bonnie specifically told him he couldn't. (If you need parking go to the garage that is on the next block south... it is covered and it is the same price as these outdoor lots.

The other night I heard gunshots outside my building and looked out and saw 3 cars of gangbangers fighting in the parking lot. nice. There is no security here either. Sometimes the outside doors are locked sometimes they aren't.

My apartment has one smoke detector, but I'm pretty sure it doesn't work because the indicator light never flashes... also, I would need a 10 foot ladder to reach it to test it because it is so high on the wall (high ceilings in this building). I once asked to borrow a ladder and was told I couldn't. My hardwood floors (2nd floor is hardwood) are not in great shape either... I won't be surprised if they try to charge me for them when I move out, then not fix them and try to charge the next person as well, just like my last apartment. My hot water doesn't work very well either, and the showerhead in my bathroom is a joke. It's like showering under a leaky bucket. Sometimes I have hot water, sometimes luke warm, sometimes just cold water.

Also, I can hear my neighbors door buzzer fairly well... and I don't know what kind of people live here, but their buzzer rings at all hours of the day, and people will hold the buzzer for a full minute sometimes, waking me up in the middle of the night and causing my dogs to bark.

My closet is also broken... I have had maintenance in here to fix it but the door still doesn't close. I was told that was the best they could/would do.

The only reason I still live here is because I have 2 dogs, and it's very hard to find a place that will take 2 50 lbs dogs in the downtown area.

The elevators break at least once a week... and the security phone in the elevators is ALWAYS missing. I was told they were considering installing the metal speakerphone type phones that most elevators have these days, but Bonnie wouldn't spend the money on them.

The guys that run the parking lot are great... I don't park there anymore though due to the poor winter maintenance, and because I don't want to give her any more money than I have to... since parking is the same $$ at the garage less than a block away, I park there.
