Great View, Great Staff, High Rent

I have to say that first off, most of the Staff at Gaslight Lofts are spectacular. The three girls (Jen, Jenny & Katrina) are ALWAYS pleasant to deal with and go the extra mile to help. They put up with a LOT and do a great job. My ONLY concerns are price and maintenance.

The view facing North is great. The view to the east is terrible, as you have a great view of Jefferson Block, and a constant reminder that they are paying less than you are. Speaking of the view, maintenance has yet to remove the Christmas lights from the trees out front. It's July. That's lazy.

The place is generally VERY quiet. I've only had ONE experience where someone in the hall was obnoxiously loud, and a note on his door solved that problem for the most part. Outdoor noise is a problem during festivals...but that's part of living downtown.

Maintenance is OK. There was a change in the maintenance staff recently. The maintenance manager is friendly...he's really nice....but there seem to be budget constraints that are not the fault of the staff onsite. The only fault of maintenance: A resident occasionally gets lazy and puts trash in the trash room that doesn't fit down the chute. Maintenance has left some items there now...for over a month. That's excessive. Ok, trash room and christmas lights.

Also, some major fixes needed to our unit have not been completed. A window seal is broken and needs replacing. I've asked 4 different people about it over the course of nine months. "The window guy will look at it next time he is here." That was...2 months ago. I've also heard "It won't get replaced due to budget problems." "Yup, the seal is broken." If I'm paying over $2400 for a view out of 30 feet of windows, I want to see out of every window. I also want some help cleaning them, as I don't own a 30 foot extension ladder as a renter. Even offer me a service to pay for...

A couple units on the 5th floor have leaked into 4th floor units during the bad storms back in June. Due to that, I have a stain in my carpet and a water stain on the ceiling. After asking for it to be painted, and waiting for 2 weeks, I did it myself. The layouts are great, although only my bedroom has another tenant above.

The price though...it's HIGH. For the price I pay, I expect the entire apartment to be painted when I move in...not just spot painted. I would also expect some amenities...like maybe cable, or internet...or some decent black or stainless appliances instead of these cheap white things. We even have to pay for trash pickup and water.

We have an amenity fee...of $250 or $300...and I think that is to cover them letting the cable guy in for you...and accepting your packages at the front desk. There are also events in the club room with food and alcohol, to meet the other residents. They do a great job with those, about once every 60-90 days.

If you have pets, you'll probably get more for your amenity fee. And you get access to the workout room...Two treadmills, an elliptical, a bike, and a limited weight machine...I only use it for cardio, when I do.

Parking...the underground usually has a waiting list. Guest parking for out-of-towners can be difficult, and the street is the best bet. I was lucky and got a garage spot right away when I moved in. I requested a two car spot a couple months before I actually needed it, so that worked out well when I got a second car.

For the money, I would check Jefferson Block across the street. I like the friendly staff...I like the quiet...the tenants are generally friendly and respectful. My favorite part is the view...but I want to check out Jefferson Block before my lease is up to see if I can get more for my money without living with a bunch of partying students.

Pets...they allow some pretty big dogs...and now allow two dogs per unit. Pet rent used to be $20/month/pet.

All in all, I really enjoy living here. The staff really make it more enjoyable than anywhere else I have lived. I just expect a little more for my money as far as maintenance and amenities.
