Southgate Apartments

I have lived here almost three years. Every year I said I wanted to move but I just never found the motivation. My lease ends in February which sucks. I would love to just extend my lease a few months so I could move sometime when its not freakin cold, but they do not do that. My apartment is cool. I have a 1 bedroom loft, about 1,000 ft. The price is not bad (roughly $700), and I cannot find any other apartment layouts that I like as much as the lofted. The kitchen is pretty dinky. But heat is included which is really nice. Street parking is not a good idea. I was broken into twice, my car hit once, and then finally stolen. So now I pay $25 a month for the parking lot. I don't have neighbor issues, in fact it is a rare occassion that I see someone else in my building. My boyfriend and I joke that we are the only ones here. Amanda in the office is great. It is a huge complex though, so requests can take some time. After 3 years I still do not have my name on the doorbell (no one does) or my mailbox. We were without hot water for 5 days once. Oh and don't use the storage spaces. Ours has flooded 4 times since we have been here. Although we never used it because we were given 3 keys that didn't actually open it, then once we had a good key, our locker was taken. Then it took a month to get someone to move out of it. But we decided not to pursue it anyways because of the flooding. They have an awesome newspaper deal. I get it every day for like $7 a month!!!
So for $750 I get my apartment ($693), 1 cat ($25), 1 extra parking spot ($25), and monthly newspaper ($7). My rent has gone up a little each renewal. The area is fine. Near lots of parks. Conveniently by interstate. Lots of basic shopping within 2 miles (pick n save, target, walmart, walgreens) So overall, I am pretty neutral. It's a good starter apartment.

Yeah, they will not budge on that. I have asked them and they said it is only yearly, no additional add on months, even if you pay more.

Suggestion - report any unresolved plumbing or heating concerns to the city safety inspector. Doing so will result in mandatory professional (licensed) plumbing/heating repair.
Unless the office staff is personally affected by loss or damage, do not expect empathy or support.
Do not despair - not all apartment complexes are run this way. Check apartment review resources prior to renting. Yes, it is unfortunate that some people do not have computer access, but it IS available at public libraries and there are librarians who will assist rental seekers who are not computer savvy.
