Great Apartments...If you don't pay full price

I have lived here since it was still under construction, so I know the management staff quite well and have no problems with them.

I qualify for the low-income tax credit, which means I pay only 50% of the retail value. I have a one-bedroom, 933 sq. ft apartment for less than $600 a month.

Parking is a problem, but I have an indoor parking spot for $50 a month and I highly recommend it to anyone. I was getting about that much in tickets before I decided to get the spot. The streets outside are in terrible condition, but management has tried very hard to appeal to the city and our alderman. Unfortunately, the city will not comply. In fact, awhile back they dug up the street to fix piping, and left it in WORSE condition than when they started. And they are not willing to change the street parking regulations, I know one reason being that the building next door (the only other one on the street) didn't want them to relax the rules. Cars do get broken into often; for some reason the city sends more parking checkers over here than actual cops.

Heating IS gas, not electric, and Teweles does pay for it. My energy bills are very small in the winter, but high in the summer because the old brick and cement building is a sauna, so I have to keep the air on all summer long.

The first 7 floors are government-subsidised, but you cannot be a full-time student and get the credit...only part-time. I do sometimes feel that I am back in college housing. People kick the elevators doors and leave shoe prints, they leave their junk mail all over the lobby floor (because throwing it in the trash is too hard), and awhile back someone yanked on the front door so hard that they broke the door in pieces. (The contractors should have known that the one locked door needed to be more than flimsy particle board with a veneer coating.)

I do agree that it seems they "cut corners" a bit on construction, but at this stage in my life and for what I get for rent, I am very happy here.

Added 8/26/06: Since my initial rating, I have become very dissatisfied with management and other issues of the building. Truthfully, it is getting very ghetto. Managment is so lazy, it's unbelievable. They seriously can't get their act together. I boggles my mind to wonder what they do all day...between 5 hour workdays and 2 hour lunches that is.

I understand the tax credit program; I guess what I meant to say was, for the size of the apartment and the amenities (for the most part) I think it's still a good deal. Although management is getting under my skin, I still like it here. If that sort of thing doesn't bother you, and you really like the apartments (they are pretty cool inside) then I would still recommend living here.

It sounds like you are a bit confused. The tax credit is not yours; it is the apartment investor's. Your rent is not 50% off, your income is 50% of the area median. Your rent is not government subsidised; it is government regulated. Also, you can be a full time student as long as someone living in the apartment is not.

This person is not the only one confused. When I looked at this apartment I was told that fulltime students were not welcome because it was against rules. When I went there for a party recently I saw nothing but students. It could have been a dorm. Def seems like one. Didn't see any security at all, no wonder the party was rockin so hard. Rock on Concrete jungle!

Waste no time arguing about this issue - and accept that even at half price this place is not worth it!

The original review was so favorable that I found the other reviews so harsh. The four months later version is more of what we are seeing now. Almost a year later, with new management but still the same old issues are there.
